CHOIR COMPETITIONS AT WELLINGTON Two school choirs from Christchurch were placed In the children’s chorus sections of tile Wellington Competitions Society’s festival, decided on Saturday. In one section the Woolstpn School choir was placed first, and In the other the St. Albans School choir gained third L elter' Messrs F. A. Bullock and J. R. tester, both of Christchurch, are the judges of the vocal and elocution sections. Detailed results of the choir competi tions are as follows: —

CHILDREN’S CHORUS Open to anv school, 20 to 30 voices, under P 16 years, two-part song and unison song, both accompanied. First prize, challenge shield presented by Charles Begg and Company, Ltd., Wellington. (Two entries.) • ~ • „„ Woolston School (Christchurch), 77 Napfer Junior-Choir, 75 points • • 2 Mr Bullock said that this was not a very good section, both choruses being, troubled by intonation. Not enough use was made of expression marks and the attack was not always crisp. ■ CHILDREN’S CHORUS

Open- to any children’s choir under 16 years. Unison songs, accompanied. First prize challenge shield presented by Stewart Dawson and Company, Ltd., Wellington. (Five entries.) Lower Hutt Children’s Choir. 84 points 1 Hastings Junior Choir, 77 points .. 2 St. Albans School (Christchurch), 76 'points -■ .. • • • • ••. 3 Mf Bullock said intonation’ was the main fault in the section. The winners were outstanding and kept well to pitch. They had a good crisp - attack and made good use of expression marks. They showed good understanding, phjase.d well, and altogether gave good work. The second prize winners had fair balance, but Intonation troubled them In places. Their entries were quite good but their attack ,was not always quite crisn enough. The Woolston choir and its conductor will arrive this morning at Lyttelton by the steamer express, and will be welcomed by Mr W. J. Knighton and other members of the Woolston School Committee.
