WESTERN TO PLAY BULLER TEAM SOUTH ISLAND SEMI-FINAL OF CHATHAM CUP Promising to be one of the most exciting games ever seen in Christchurch, the meeting of Western (Canterbury) and Thistle (Buller) at English Park tomorrow in the South Island semi-final of the Chatham Cup competition. Is arousing keen Interest. Western Impressed by its overwhelming victory over Nomads in the Canterbury final as one of the best club sides ever to have taken the field in this city. In 1936 Western won the Chatham Cup for the first time, and this season, with a much better side, it has a great chance of again winning the premier trophy for club sides In New Zealand. One of its closest games In 1986 was against the Buller club side Millerton All Blacks, On Saturday Western will have, the same team that was so successful against Nomads.
The Thistle team is formidable, no less than nine of its players being Buller representatives. One of Its most versatile players is G. Orman, South Island Rugby Union representative, and recently chosen as a member of the New Zealand Rugby League team to tour England. J. Blythe, the keeper, has represented Buller for some time. Three full-backs are listed. A. Plummer, at right back, has all the qualifications for a first-class defender. D, Ewart and D. Ijffiller, both left backs, are tireless workers and deadly tacklers. The half line Is particularly strong, and consists of players who have been In the forefront of football in Buller for years. J. Robertson, at right half, has the responsibility of captaincy, although he is a young player.
The forwards contain some well-known players and represent the cream of the Buller representative side. C. Orman has represented his district since 1928. J. Tlplady, inside him. Is clever with his feet and quick to seize the smallest opening. For speed and Individual cleverness F. Plummer has no equal in Buller. P. Taylor, on the left’ flank, is extremely fast and accurate with his centring kicks. W. Milligan, the reserve forward, is equally at home in any position.
