ACTIVITY IN BULLER
DEVELOPMENT OF COUNTY EXTENSIVE ROAD WORKS I i Great activity in road improvement work throughout the Buller County during recent weeks was reported to the County Council by the olerk•Dgineer (Mr C. P. Schadick), who, said that a large stretch of highway between Orowaitl cemetery and Fairdown had almost been made ready for sealing. Messrs Fulton and Hogan had supplied 3000 yards of crushed 1 .gravel of their contract.; Fifty men, 'five lorries, a heavy roller and Diesel grader had been working.on this job, ’which was well ahead d schedule.
The report stated that it was proposed to reconstruct and seal the road from Kerr’g crossing to Turns, creek and other areas in the vicinity of Granity and Hector, while provision had also been made for sealing a new stretch of footpath. Other stretches of road, especially that from Westport to Carter’s Beach, had been solidified and generally improved. Besides grading and sealing, new culverts were also being constructed and small bridges renewed. The bridge across Stillwater creek was almost completed. Reporting on rate collections, the clerk-engineer said that lists of defaulters were being handed to -■the county .solicitor and where Crown leaSes were involved the Commissioner Of Crown Lands was being made aware Of the position. r The statistical returns showed a great increase in the number of heavy traffic licences, and a record issue of driver’s licences was made, totalling 880, compared with 820 last year. The lehgths of roads (540 miles), tracks (264 miles); and bridges (15,084 feet) were also a record. —__r_
