WOMANS BODY FOUND

■ ♦ DISCOVERY ON BEACH NEAR CLAVERLEY IDENTITY NOT ESTABLISHED The police are investigating the discovery of the partly-decomposed body of a woman, found on the beach at Taratuhi. a few miles north of the Public Works Department camp at Claverley. The body, apparently that of a middle-aged woman, was found by a public works employee, N. McLean.

The features of the woman were not clearly recognisable, and up to a late hour last night her identity had not been established. According to a public works official, the body appeared as though it had not been long in the sea, and was in a good state of preservation, except that the feet and hair were missing. A departmental employee waited beside the body until the arrival of Constable McLennan, of Kaikoura.

Police Superintendent S. Rawle, who was visiting Kaikoura yesterday on a routine visit, has taken charge of the investigations. Ho stated last evening that he had no statement to make about the discovery. The woman’s body, which was taken to Kaikoura, was found at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. The route of the South Island Main Trunk line, on which public works men are engaged, runs alongside the beach where the discovery was made. So far a date has not been fixed for the inquest.
