CHURCH APPLIES BAN

Irish Republican Army Members PRISONERS IN DARTMOOR REFUSED SACRAMENTS? » (mmnnT c&xl* tunes.} (Received July 20, 11.50 p.m.) LONDON, Jyly 20. Nine young members of the Irish Republican Army who are serving long-term sentences in Dartmoor for participation in the recent bomb outrages have been virtually excommunicated by the Catholic Church. Canon Ryan, the prison chaplain and a native of Cork, with die knowledge of Bishop Barrett, of Plymouth, refused the prisoners the Sacraments, telling the men that the Church sternly condemned all secret societies which plotted against the Church or State. Relatives of the men are contemplating an appeal to Rome, alleging that the refusal is a spiritual persecution and asking that the convicts be treated purely as political prisoners.
