ESCAPE FROM DETENTION ON WANGANELLA

AUCKLAND, July 19. Described by the police as a prohibited immigrant and refused permission by the Auckland Customs authorities to land when he arrived on Tuesday by the Wanganella from Sydney, Gennero Valenzi, an Italian, aged 44, disappeared from the ship this after r noon and has not been found. Valenzi travelled as a passenger on the Wanganella. It was said that he was able to speak practically no English, and that the papers in his possession were insufficient even to warrant his being given a temporary permit to land. The authorities ordered his detention on board the Wanganella until further inquiries were made; Shortly after 1 o’clock this afternoon Valenzi was not to be found.
