TERRITORIALS’ PHYSIQUE
♦ ; MEN GAIN WEIGHT AND HEIGHT . V RECORDS SHOW EFFECTS * OF TRAINING !■ The claim of the military authorities that territorial training improves th« physique of the trainees is upheld by effects observed in 39 men of the sth draft. Territorial Force Special Reserve, who recently went into training at the Southern District Military School, Burnham. Without exception, these 39 men put on weight during the period of their training. Many of the gains noted were considerable—not just a few pounds which might be accounted for as a natural variation. The heaviest gain was 231 b, followed by two of 22Jb; and there were others of 211 b, 201 b, 18ilb, 181 b, 161 b, and lOilb. The smallest increase noted was 21b; but this man made uo for his slight increase in weight by putting on an inch in height. The carefully kept records of the school show that the 39 men gained 483J1b among them, an average increase in weight of approximately 12Jlb. The average increase in height was half an inch. The men were all regarded as splendid physical specimens when they offered their services, so that the increases are taken as a striking tribute to the value of the training and the excellence of the food at the military school.
