Sir James Hutchison, editor of the “Otago Daily Times,” who has been visiting Australia and the North Island, arrived in Christchurch yesterday. He will be returning to Dunedin on Saturday. The City Engineer, Mr A. R. Galbraith, who has been granted three months’ sick leave by the Christchurch City Council, will leave Christchurch, on Friday, July 28, for Auckland to connect with the Awatea for Sydney. He will go from Sydney to South Africa, leaving Australia on August 5. Messrs W. R. Carey, J. L. Passmore, F. W. Johnston, and J. S. Payne were passengers from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. After being connected for more than half a century with shipping Captain A. Smith, superintendent stevedore at Auckland for the New Zealand Shipping Company, retired on Tuesday. Captain Smith, who is a native of Turriff, Aberdeenshire, is the son of a sea captain and has had nearly 40 years’ service with the New Zealand Shipping Company.—“ The Press” Special Service. Mr lan Lauder, formerly of Christchurch and a graduate of Canterbury University College, has received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Manchester University. Dr. Lauder is 25 years of age. He was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, and had a distinguished career at Canterbury College. He gained the B.Sc. degree in 1936, with a senior scholarship in chemistry. The following year he graduated to M.Sc., gaining also an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship.' tenable at Manchester University. Dr. Lauder has been offered a senior award for three years in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in England. He hopes to spend a holiday in New Zealand before beginning fresh research work.
