THE DAVIS CUP CONTEST

PHILIPPINE PLAYERS OUTCLASSED AUSTRALIANS WIN FINAL SINGLES (Received July 17. 9 p.m.) LONG BEACH (California), July 16. The Davis Cup tie between Australia and the Philippines, the final singles which do not affect the match, resulted as follows: J. Bromwich (Australia) beat Sanchez (Philippines), 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. A. K, Quist (Australia) beat Ampon (Philippines), 7-5, 6-4, 6-3. Playing in a manner which was in direct contrast with yesterday’s sorry showing. Bromwich beat Sanchez without ceremony, although the Filipino’s game had much improved over his match with Quist. Bromwich’s two-handed strokes were working perfectly. and he continually sent down deep drives which found no answer. Bromwich took the first four games before Sanchez held his serve to win the only game of the first set, Sanchez took his own service to open the second set, after which Bromwich swept the six games in a row. In the final set Sanchez fought desperately, but could not withstand the Australian’s relentless baseline attack. Sanchez held his service twice and broke through Bromwich’s once. The match lasted 53 minutes.

In his match with Quist, Ampon gave another remarkable exhibition of returning everything, but the Australian was just too powerful. Quist had difficulty with his overhead shots, -but his ground strokes were working well and proved sufficient to beat the Filipino handily. In the first set Quist won the first four games. Ampon then picked up the pace and took three in succession. In the second set. with the games 3-3, Quist broke through Ampon’s service, running the game to 5-3 before Ampon took his fourth and final game. Ampon’s best position in the third set was 2-2.
