WESTPORT BAR CROSSED

OVERSEAS VESSEL LEAVES ONE OF LARGEST TO VISIT PORT The overseas vessel, City of Glasgow, which arrived at Westport last Thursday with 1350 tons of cargo, drawing 18 feet 6 inches, loaded 1200 tons of bunker coal, and sailed for Wellington, thence to Canada on Saturday morning, safely negotiating the bar, which the shipping authorities had reported as being not negotiable for some of the larger colliers earliei in the week. This vessel is one of the largest to visit Westport. The greatest tonnage ever taken from the port was 5555 tons of coal on the Biloela, an Australian Admiralty ship, which worked the port many years ago. On this occasion “ was drawing 22 feet 2 inches, a record for the port. In 1926, the Willesden left port drawing 21 feet 2 inches. Exception is being taken locally to the remarks of the Minister for M® 6B (the Hon. P. C. Webb) that coal shipments had been interrupted by bad bar conditions at Westport and Greymouth. It is claimed that Westport is often workable when even emptyships cannot make Greymouth, and an instance was given last week when a Union Company collier, which had almost run short of fuel, put back to Westport from the Greymouth roadstead for bunkers and then returned to Greymouth BASKETBALL MATCHES IN BULLER COMPETITION At basketball on Saturday at Westport. Denniston Old Girls 28 beat Technical Old Girls B 5. and Granity High School beat St. Mary’s College B. A further representative trial match was played, and the team to play at Greymouth for the Kawatiri Cup will be selected this week. PLAYER INJURED Miss E. Overton (Denniston) collided with another player in the Buller trial basketball match and reopened an old cut under an eye, necessitating tne insertion of three stitches. WESTPORT TERRITORIAL FORCE Although 10 recruits have joined since the appeal was made by the Prime Minister, the Westport Territorial Force is at present 19 behind the complement, which is 60 men. But for many members having been transferred to other districts, the force would now be at full strength.
