The Minister for Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb), who arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Wellington, will return to the north by air tq-day. The Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) visited Temuka, Winchmore, and the Hinds district yesterday to address Public Works employees on defence. The Minister, who was accompanied on the tour by Mr F. Langbein (District Engineer), Mr T. G. Beck (engineer at Temuka), and Mr N. Johnson (private secretary), returned to Wellington by last night’s steamer express. Members of Parliament travelling north by the steamer express last evening for the opening of the session to-day included the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, Messrs W. M. C. Denham. H. S. S Kyle, C. L. Carr, J. W. Munro, S. G. Holland, A. N. Grigg, D! G. Kidd, P. Neilson, J. Hargest, and J. A. Roy. Members of the Legislative Council who travelled north by the steamer express last evening included the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, the Hon. J. Goodall, the Hon. T. F. Doyle, and the Hon. M- Connelly. Congratulations to Sir Thomas Hunter, ViceChancellor of the University of New Zealand, and to Sir Walter Scott, a graduate oL the college, on their inclusion in the Birthday Honours were expressed at yesterday s meeting of the Canterbury University College Council. Mr Douglas Robison (Invercargill), who has accepted a short-term commission in the Royal Air Force, will leave Christchurch to-day to join the Rimutaka for England. The Mayor, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., left last evening for Wellington to attend the opening of Parliament. He expects to return for the week-end. Mr T. H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, was a passenger for the north by the steamer express last night. The Rev. Father C. J. Collins, of Forbury, Dunedin, was a passenger by the steamer express for "Wellington last night, Mr J G. D. Ward was a passenger by the steamer express for Wellington last evening. Mr M. Bleakly, assistant lecturer in zoology at Canterbury University College, was yesterday granted by the college council two years leave to enable him to visit England for research work. ■■
