NEW TRAFFIC INSPECTORS
FLOOD OF APPLICATIONS CANVASSERS WARNED Nearly 500 applications have been received by the Christchurch City Council for the eight new positions on the staff of traffic inspectors, and council officials believe that the number will be nearer 1000 than 500 when applications close on July 3. This will give the council and its committees one of the biggest “sifting” tasks they have had for a long time, but the chairman of the traffic committee of the council (Mr H. E. Denton) expressed gratification yesterday at the wide choice which would be offered to the council. “The applications have come from many places outside Christchurch as well as within the city, and it is reasonable to believe that the council will be able to choose men from this list with excellent qualifications,” he said. The council had about 500 schedules of duties printed, but yesterday the order had to be given for the printing of a further 500. “It is regrettable that a certain amount of canvassing has been going on concerning these appointments,” said Mr Denton. “Members of the council and officers have been approached by many persons with direct and indirect interest in the appointments, and I want it to be understood clearly that canvassing will disqualify any applicant.” He explained that the applications would be considered first by a sub-committee of the traffic committee of the council, then by the traffic committee, and finally the appointments would be made by the council itself.
