AMALGAMATION WITH CITY
DESIRE FOR EXPEDITION OF PROPOSAL
STATEMENT BY MAYOR OF NEW BRIGHTON
The Mayor (Mr E. L. Smith) reported at a meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council last evening on inquiries he had made about the proposal to re-erect the Bower bridge and the allocation of the cost. He said that he intended moving at the next meeting of the council, “that the Christchurch City Council be asked to expedite the amalgamation of New Brighton and Christchurch, and the reconstruction of the Bower bridge.” Crs. J. S. Ainsworth, J. N. Clarke, H. R. Macdonald. W. E. S. Furby, A. W. Owles, T. E. Thomson, W, T. Glasgow, and C. V. Lester were also present. Mr M. B. Hayes was appointed act-ing-town clerk and treasurer, in place of Mr C. T. Middleton, who is on retiring leave until December 31. The Mayor, in his statement, reported that the centennial committee was working hard to raise the funds required for the Plunket building. The Mayor and Cr. Clarke were appointed to attend a conference of Canterbury local bodies to consider a proposal to commemorate the centennial of the nrovince in 1950, by restoring the Canterbury Museum.A resolution was carried extending the sympathy of the Mayor and councillors with Cr. T. E. Thomson, in the deaths of Mr W. F. Soper and Mr Thomson (a nephew who was killed at Kaikoura recently in a motor accident). A resolution of sympathy was also carried with Mr Samuel Bruce, a former councillor! and family in the death of Mrs Bruce.
