MINISTER VISITS RANGIORA

SUBSIDISED LABOUR DISCUSSED

NO DEPUTATIONS* RECEIVED

The availability of subsidised labour for the Rangiora County and Borough Councils was discussed by the Minister for Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) with council officers during a brief visit to Rangiora late yesterday afternoon. No deputations were received, but the Minister met the Town Clerk, Mr J. M. Fraser, and the County Clerk, Mr S. G. Dailey. The Minister did not agree to proposals (not available for publication) from the County Council, but Mr Fraser indicated later that the Minister’s reply to points raised was satisfactory as far as probable borough requirements were concerned, and he thought it likely that a certain amount of subsidised labour would later be available locally. . , , The Minister was accompanied oy Mr A. A basketball match played at the Rangiora High School grounds was won by Papanui Technical College by 20 goals to 13, against Rangiora High School. Miss D. White and Miss D. Mountfort were the referes. In the junior grade match. Rangiora was again beaten, Papanui winning by 18 goals to 6. A hockey match between the two schools ■vtas won by Rangiora by 2 goals to 0. Mr N. FARMERS’ UNION MEETING AT WEST MELTON A meeting of the West Melton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held recently. Mr H. E. Cross (vice-president) presided. The chairman congratulated Mr S. Pearce on winning the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s cup for three fat lambs, judged at Smithfield. The branch decided to give a special prize for members of the West Melton Young Farmers’ Club competing in the Courtenay-Paparua ploughing match, to be Held at Aylesbury in July. Mr Bevin, of Lincoln College, gave an address on "Light Land Pasture Problems.” MALVERN WOMEN’S HOCKEY In the Malvern Women’s Hockey Association's competitions at Hororata the Kirwee team was beaten by Hororata by 3 goals to 1. Miss Ena Henderson shot the goal for Kirwee, and Miss Daphne McKenzie shot two goals for Hororata and. Miss Frances Gray one. Mrs Comley and Mr Henderson were tbe referees. There was a good attendance at a euchre evening at the Akaroa Fire Brigade station. The first women’s prize was won by ,• Miss E. Jacobson, Miss W. Pool winning the consolation. Mr James Glynanwon the men’s prize and Mr R. Woodill the men’s consolation prize.
