GRANITE AT ONAWE
MAY BE VALUABLE FOR BUILDING DISCOVERY BY PROFESSOR R. SPEIGHT Granite of attractive appearance was discovered by Professor R. Speight on Onawe Peninsula on Wednesday. There were two quarries on the island Professor Speight said, but one was much superior to the other. The good quality granite was slate coloured.with felspar crystals all through the stone. The opinion .was expressed by an authority on building stones that this deposit of granite would polish remarkably well and be very valuable for ornamental building purposes.
In discussing the variety of geological specimens to be found on Banks Peninsula. Professor Speight said he considered the land above sea level had been thrown up by the extinct volcano in Akaroa Harbour, and that the original deposits were underneath. The granite was similar to that on the hilltops, but had net been subject to pressure. The redstone at the Akaroa Heads and at Scenery Nook was formed by the burning of rock substances during volcanic eruption, and was very rich in iron deposits.
