NOMINATIONS CLOSED FOR BY-ELECTION

LABOUR V. NATIONAL

Only two candidates, a nominee of the Government and a nominee of the National Party, will contest the Christchurch South by-election on June 3. The candidates for the seal, which was made vacant by the death of Mr E. J. Howard, will be Mr R. M. Macfarlane (Labour) and Mr M. E. Lyons (.National),

Nominations closed with the reluming officer for the electorate, Mr T. W. Reese, at noon yesterday. Mr Macfarlanc’s nomination had been received on Saturday, and Mr Lyons's nomination was received yesterday morning, all seven of his nominators being women, Mesdames M. E. Smith, E. Stark, and E, A. Connor, and Misses G. N. Martin. D. E. Monday, F. C, Farrow, and E. S, McKee.

Mr Ilccsc said that the polling booths for the by-election would be the same as those for lire General Elect ion in November, All arrangements for (ho taking of the poll were in hand. MR J. A. LEE TO SPEAK TO-NIGHT Mr R. M. Maefarlane, the Labour candidate in the Christchurch South by-election, will speak to-night hi conjunction with Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., in the Coronation Hall, Domain terrace.

Mr Lee is regarded as a brilliant and forceful speaker, and it is anticipated that there will be a large audience to hear him speak to-night.
