BAD CORNER ON MAIN HIGHWAY

PLAN FOR IMPROVEMENT PROPOSED

The Sumner Borough Council has evolved a plan for the improvement of the dangerous corner on the main highway at the intersection of Nayland street and Wakefield avenue. After correspondence between the council, the 'Transport Department, and the Post and Telegraph Department, the council took the initiative, and after a suggestion made by Cr. W, J. Duff at the previous meeting, an inspection of this corner was made.

As a result, a recommendation was made by the committee that the council offer to remove the whole of the Post Office verandah and balcony a„t its own expense. In addition, the glassedin portion of (he building forming the porch would bo removed, and this would then enable the corner to be rounded ofl. as desired. It was decided to forward the report to the Public Works Department.

Thcn> were present the Mavor (Mr J. E. Tail). CTs. F. T. Eldridge, I, J Wilson. W. J. Duff, J. L. Gant, P. C. .Fenwick, E. T. Chilly, and C. E. Claydon. A letter from the Christchurch Tramway Board advising that the rate for the coming year would be 3-16 d in the £ of capital value of all rateable property was received. The National Peace Council wrote esking the council to support a proposal to hold a world peace conference.

Cr. Chitty said that, the request was a reasonable one, and In view of recent ncws.it appeared that the council should support such a proposal. It was decided to support the proposal. Cr. Eldridge was appointed to represent the council at a visit of inspection of the various hospital buildings on May 31. Mrs G. Murray wrote protesting ngainst the proposal to provide camping facilities for motorists in St. Leonard’s square. She said she deprecated anything that might interfere with the availability of the ground for sports purposes. Cr. Chitty said that there seemed to bo an impression that the whole of the park was going to be used, whereas actually only the eastern corner would bo used.

The Mayer said that those interested in (he various sports bodies need not worry, as the parking area was only a temporary provision until a suitable area became available.

A special report on St. Leonard’s square was later received. Various improvements for the benefit of sports bodies were discussed.
