DEFENCE
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS Sir, —As Mr McKay said in his letter in this morning’s paper, it is quite apparent that Mr Semple has changed his ideas, and. unfortunately, it seems as though the same can be said of the Labour Government itself. Mr McKay is quite correct when he states that one of the principal points in the pre-war policy of the Labour Party was the abolition of military service, and it is to be very much regretted that they are not adhering to that policy now. in spite of scaremongers and militarists. It would almost appear as though pressure is being brought to bear upon them, as it was on Mr Ramsay MacDonald in England. I am afraid the Labour Government is'in grave danger of losing its idealism and becoming materialistic, which would be a great pity indeed. Furthermore. it is the wasting of so much money on measures of defence which will cripple the country and not the spending of it on public works or social benefits, etc., as our Nationalist friends would have us believe. —Yours, etc., (MRS) N. STALLARD. May 22, 1939.
