TURF GOSSIP

Novice Hurdler The only schooling at Riccarton yesterday was done by Dropped Catch, ■who jumped six hurdles in a pleasing manner. This Winning Hit gelding has made gradual improvement ns a jumper, and as he can command a useful turn of speed, he should soon make good. Expensive Jumper Redolent's trip to the Otaki and Manawntu meetings has mil. been very satisfactory. He Cell at Otaki. failed’to finish tlie course at Awapuni on the first day owing to a bad jump sending him to a rear position, and lost his rider on Saturday. In his first three attempts over the big fences, therefore. he has failed to complete his tasks. Nearing an End The last Fonrteen-One Handicap has been run in Sydney. Since the Kensington Club ran a race of that description a few weeks ago, Sydney trainers have’ been informed by A.K.C. officials (tiat such events will be deleted from all future programmes. So the end of all pony racing, in the metropolitan area at least, is brought, anal her step closer. First the Fourteen -lands races. Now the Fourteen-Ones. ,Tow long th n n before the 14.2'Handilaps follow them? It is the march ot lime, but keen racing men regret the inevitable. Those fourtcen-two races of the old A.R.C. days produced some_ of the finest, racing and some of the finest hide racehorses which the Australian turf has seen.

Spear Chief's Success M. McCarten has always held a high opinion of Spear Child’, but lie relumed to Sydney from Brisbane convinced that be has ridden few bettor horses than the former Queensland champion. “Spear Chief's Brisbane Cup win was rnore remarkable than .1 can tell," said McCarten. “The field was going so fast that, all Iho way. I was afraid that Spear Chief's 0-7 would trouble him at the finish. I still had that fear when J asked Spear Chief for his finishing effort, but he galloped as I hough hr had be-mi cantering, along, instead of going PSrecord pace, and ho was absolutely fresh well he pulled up." Even more omphalic than McCarten, however, is Mr J. B. Charlton, Spear Chief's part owner. “Spear Chief is the greatest horse in Australia, and we will not pari with him at any prior. Defaulter should never have beaten bun," declared Mr Charlton after the Brisbane Cup. Spear Chief is gradually rising among Australia's big stake winners. His total is now £ 11.530, and lie will probably rare for another two seasons. Stable's Three Successes One of (he most impressive wins at the Awapuni races last week was that of Ilm Great Northern candidate Charade in the Rangitira Hurdles. She outclassed her opponents and won full of running. Charade is in capital order for her important engagement at Auckland, and. as she is a brilliant jumper and sound stayer, she made many friends. The trainer IT, S. Greene also won the Mnnawatu Steeplechase with John Charles on Friday, and the Awapuni Steeples with his gelding. Lord Hereford, on Saturday, and at! litiee were ridden by A, Jenkins. John Charles, a good hurdler, was tried unsuccess-, fully as a steeplechaser last winter. He din not take to the fences too welt, but Ibis year he has been out with the Hawke's Bay hounds. The outings have effected a groat improvement, as he jumped well and proved superior class to his opponents. Being a sound stayer and pood in heavy gTnvmd. his prospects for the winter took bright, but it may be a little difficult to keep him pound.

Artificial Aids lo Speed Wild rumours that a gang of dopers is operating in Sydney is probably unfounded (says an Australian writer), but the stewards are not disregarding the possibility that horses are being given stimulants, whether by outsiders or the trainers themselves, and they are taking precautions. At Hawkesbury recently. Mr G. Williams, chairman of the stipendiary stewards, interviewed the trainer of a horse that entered the mounting enclosure m n lather, and obviously in a nervous condition. The trainer was able to prove that the horse had not been interfered with, aijd that it was normally inclined to break into a sweat before a race. But the fact that Mr Williams took the trouble to ask questions indicates that he and his fel-low-stewards are keeping a close watch on ail runners.

Undoubtedly, a certain amount of doping docs go on in Sydney. A prominent veterinary surgeon declares that during any day's racing he can pick out many horses which have received some aid to their speed. Drugged Horses

The position, however, has improved considerably in the last few years. Shortly after the merging of the Australian Racing Club and the Australian Jockey Club interests early in 10,33 it was nothing unusual to see horses enter the official enclosure fighting mad with some drug. Keen backers used to wait the horses' arrival before betting. They waited so that, from the antics in the enclosure, . they could judge which horses had been given a stimulant. Then they would bet confidently—and seldom lost. They cannot carry out those betting tactics now. But the stewards must continue their deterring work, so that such a state of affairs does not return to Sydney racing.

Valpeen, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton twice, which dropped dead at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa yesterday.

SENSATIONS AT TE RAPA

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

AUCKLAND, May 22. Thrills were provided at the Waikato Racing Club's winter meeting at Te Rapa to-dav, and the climax was reached when Race Camp won the last event and paid more than a century for a win and double figures for a place. The day opened sensationally when Ngawiri won the first race and paid more than two-thirds of a century on the straight-out machine and double figures for a place. All the other winners, with the exception of Midland, returned double figures, Biform paying more than a third of a century in the Waikato Steeplechase, and Maori Song more than a quarter of a century in the Te Rapa Handicap. Jumpers Killed

Further sensations were added when Black Marlin fell and broke his neck in the Waikato Steeplechase, and Valpeen dropped dead about 30 yards from the post. D. Craddock, rider of Black Marlin, received slight concussion, and H. Turner, rider of Valpeen, a scalp wound and a badly bruised shoulder. The Te Rapa trainer, A. Winder, and his apprentice, F. Hain, completed a stable double with Maori Song and Prince Acre, Useful Hurdlers Benefited by his race on the first day Royal Dance registered an attractive performance to win the Hamilton Hurdles at dougle figures. Although he was badly left

at the start. Royal Dance was in command heroic going six furlongs, and the only time lie was headed after that war, when Devon and Adsum went on in front along the back. Royal Dance was in command again before reaching the straight, and ho stayed on in fine style when hotly challenged at the finish by Devon, who again went, wcil. and Esteem. As a result of his effort Royal Dance has advanced in favour considerably for the Great Northern Hurdles, especially as he is gaining confidence and improving with every race. Devon deepened the good impression he created on the first day. and is a most promising hack hurdler. Esteem ran another fine race, but found Royal Dance and Devon too good at Iho weights. Innes Lad made an improved showing for fourth, and Adsum shaped creditably. Pyrenees went better than on Saturday, although lie faded near the end after being fourth entering the straight. Master Musk over-reached and cut a foreleg so badly that he had to be destroyed, He was putted up before reaching the home turn. The second fancy, Airam, failed to run to form, and was never prominent. An Outsider The little-fancied Maori Song registered one of his best performances in winning the To Rapa Handicap from the eachway favourite Royevrus, and paid more than a quarter of a century on the straight out machine. Tucked in on the rails behind the leading division until reaching the straight. Maori Song secured a good run through and lie soon took the measure of his 'opponents to win in good style. Maori Song lias returned to his best form, and as he is a good horse under winter conditions, lie should win again during the coming meetings, Royevrus registered a sterling effort and finished with the utmost gamenrss, thus drawing further attention to his prospects in the Cornwall Handicap at, Kllerslie. Valinint was always handy, and he battled on for turd, just taking that position from Black Musk, who weakened near Hie end. High Ten and General Ruse did best of the others. Royal Bachelor. tiring very quieklv in the last furlongs, finished seventh, Over Big Country The calculations of investors were completely upset in the Waikato Steeplechase when an outsider, Biform, won easily. Bifonn took no harm from his fall on the first day. and after being patiently ridden he headed En Tour and All Irish at the last fence to win easily. Recent racing has wrought great improvement in Biform, and he should win again if he keeps sound. He is a genuine stayer, and only for mishaps and unsoundness would have a much better record than he possesses. En Tour and All Irish again went fine races, and they wore together practically throughout the last, mile for the former to stay the better for second. Riotous was steadied by his weight, although he gave a good display for fourth. Saint; Musk ran down badly some of his fences and tired into fifth at the finish after being the early leader. Car Leaf showed a little improvement and may have possibilities where the class is not as good as he met to-day. Black Marlin was handy when he fell about five furlongs from home.

Sky Pilot The northern trip of the jumper Sky Pilot is to be discontinued, and instead of going to Ellerslie he will return to Riccarton at once. Sky Pilot, one of the early favourites for the Great Northern Steeplechase, pulled up very lame after contesting the Te Rapa Steeplechase on Saturday, and it was deemed inadvisable to. take him to Ellerslie. The trouble is believed to be in a tendon in one of his forelegs. Bryce Street, another prominent candidate for the Great Northern Steeplechase, is reported to be feeling the effects of his fall in the Te Rapa Steeplechase, and he was allowed to miss his engagement at the Waikato meeting yesterday.

ENGLISH PACING

FIRST TWO CLASSICS

FAVOURITES SUCCEED

cnou OITB own COBUSPOKDEJrr.) LONDON, May 1. The first two classics of the English racing season, the Two Thousand Guineas and the One Thousand Guineas, were won by the favourite and second favourite respectively. Blue Peter, owned by Lord Rosebery, won the Two Thousand by half a length from his stable companion, Admiral's Walk, and was immediately backed down to 3 to 1 for the Derby at Epsom on May 34. Neither is likely to run again before then.

Galatea H, an American-owned and French-bred iilly, won the One Thousand and her lime of Imin 38 2-sscc for the mile was faster than Blue Peter's Imm 40sec, the going being appreciably firmer. There were 25 runners in the Two Thousand, and Blue Peter and Dhoti, owned by tiie Aga Khan, were joint favourites at 5 to 1, with Fox Cub and Fairstone at 18-2, and Admiral's Walk at 100-7.

Blue Peter, who is by Fairway out of Fancy Free, comes from first class slock, and his chances for the Derby arc regarded as being particularly goorl. He was not tiring at the end of the race. Admiral's Walk (Hyper-ion--Tabaris), and Fairstone (Fairway - Rosetta) both impressed, and Smith. Blue Peter's jockey, said that Fairstone was the only horse to cause him anxiety. He hung on with great determination. A Fine Filly Galatea 11, winner of the One Thousand, is by Dark Legend from the American marc, Galady. She is in the St. Lcger as well as the- Oaks, and her chances arc fancied.

Olein started favourite at 9-2, with Galatea II at 6-1, and Aurora third at 7-1. Their chances were well summed up by backers, for Aurora finished second with Olein third. Galatea II is a big filly with great length of rein, and a big sensible head set on a muscular neck. She is splendid behind the saddle, her low strong quarters displaying great leverage.

TROTTING NOTES

A Reminder Acceptances for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday will close to-morrow at 5 p,m.

Methven and Ashburton Both the Methven and Ashburton Trotting Clubs have received excellent entries for their meetings, and there is every prospect of two days of excellent sport in the Mid-Canterbury district on June 3 and 5. The final payments for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes finds the best of the two-year-olds engaged, and with a thorough test in the Juvenile Stakes at the Canterbury Park meeting on Saturday, all the juveniles should go to the post fit and‘well. The All-Aged Stakes has failed to attract some of the best pacers in commission, but horses of the calibre of U. Scott, Ginger Jack, and Van Derby will keep the younger horses doing their best. Both Methven and Ashburton look like breaking all records in attendance for their respective meetings. An Accident

Stambnul. who fell at the Forbury Park meeting, received injuries that prevented him from being brought back to Addington. By Frank Worthy from Trix Pointer, he is a half-brother to Wrackler and other good horses, and while he showed improved form during the present season, at his best he is only useful. In Work Again

Isobel Derby has been given a good spell: but is now back in work under J. J, Kennerlcy’s charge at Addington. Isobel Derby may yet win a good race, although she apparently has her own ideas to when she should do her best. Change of Stables

Bingen Palm, who has done most of his racing under the direction of the Westport trainer, J. R. Simpson, is now in R. J. Humphreys's stable At his best, Bingen Palm is above the average, but he apparently is not always in form. Southern Smile

After the recent Forbury Park meeting. Southern Smile was returned to her owner, and she will be given a spell before she is again put hack in work. This marc was mated with Logan Derby some time ago without results, but there is the possibility (hat she will be relegated to the matron's paddock at an early date. By Adioo Guy from Regina Logan, she has much to recommend her as a brood mare. A Noted Blood Mure

Koya McKinney, one of Hie most successful brood marcs America has known, was destroyed early in April, healed in 1011. she was 28 years old. As a four-year-old she look a record of t’min V|sec lor a mile, bid she then sold lor 5000 dollars. Her subsequent form was not encouraging, am she was retired to the stud, where she proved very successful. She produced three that did 2min or belter, four that did 2min Osec, .six that did 2n:m lOsec, while she is also the granddam of eight, trotters and three pacers that registered standard times. Her most noted performers were Scotland, 1 min 59iscc, and Rose Scott, Imin 59;; see. among the trotters, while her most successful pacers were Highland Scott, Imin 59 : ; sec, and Becky Becall, 2min 3;,‘sec. Scotland is the sire of U. Scott, who in turn nas left Highland Scott, at present the recognised champion two-year-old in New Zealand. In America, Scotland lias carried on the excellence of his dam. and his star performer is Rosalind, who according to an American writer was "Hie greatest mare of the trotting world, figured from any angle." She was the world’s best two and three-year-old trotter of her respective years and the world's champion fnur-year-old filly. Last season sties capped all her records by trotling a mile in Imm ati;: ee. May Improve

The sood-ldokiii;; American stallion, Fremont, lias nol won the money expected oi him alter the brilliance he showed in his early efforts, but like other American pacers he may improve with years. His recent efforts were not impressive, but it must not be forgotten that he has won three races this season, besides being placed several times. At the Timaru meeting in January he won his last race over a mile and a quarter in 2min 46sec, and he defeated good pacers in Horse Power, Toorak, Lightning Lady, Red Pigeon. Red Ranger, and Icevus. He is engaged at Canterbury Park on Saturday. and a reproduction of his best form would find him a problem for the remainder in either the Winter Handicap. of one mile and a half, or the Stewards’ Handicap, of a mile and a quarter.
