LINCOLN Mrs A. H. Button presided at the monthly meeting of the Lincoln Women’s Institute. A demonstration on bouquet making was given by Miss Gladys Stow, of Halswell. Mrs J. W. Stewart read the report on the annual meeting of the Canterbury Federation. The secretary reported that 100 poppies had been sold for the Returned Soldiers’.Association. The competitions, which were judged by Mrs C. Moody and Miss Gladys Stow, resulted as follows: Senior; Knitted bootees, Mrs G. S. Peryman 1 Mrs C. Watkins 2, Mrs E. Carter 3; peaches, Mrs W. D. Templeton 1, Mrs E. Carter 2, Mrs C. Watkins 3; large bloom, Mrs C. Watkins 1, Mrs G. I. Peryman and Mrs J. W. Stewart, equal, 2, Mrs J. Payne 4; small bloom, Mrs W. D. Templeton 1. Mrs Bi Carter 2, Mrs C. S. Hartley 3. Junior: Bootees. Miss Noeline Ford 1, Miss Lily Ford 2; peaches. Miss N. Peryman 1; large bloom. Miss N. L. Peryman 1, Miss Daphne Moir 2; small bloom. Miss N. L. Peryman 1. The wandering shilling competition was won by Mrs J. S. Moody. The hostesses were Mesdames E. Carter, S. C. Birch, and C. Brown. . SHEFFIELD Mrs C. R. Rollinson, president, presided at the last meeting of the Sheffield Women’s Institute. Demonstrations on basket work were given by Mrs Rollinson, and Mrs H. O. Judd reported on the annual meeting of the Canterbury Federation, held in Christchurch recently. Mrs W. Gamble was appointed group convener. Motions of sympathy with Mrs D. J. Hawke and Mr and Mrs G. F. Wright were carried. Competitions resulted as follows; Scones, Mrs S. Page 1, Mrs G. Butler 2, Mrs Rollinson 3; bloom, Mrs H. M. Bull 1, Mrs W. Watson 2, Mrs Page, sen., 3; autumn tints, Mrs S. Page 1. Hostesses were Mesdames R. Anderson, Skurr, and W. Watson. LITTLE AKALOA Mrs P. J. Waghorn presided over the monthly meeting of the Little Akaloa Women's Institute. It was decided to hold the birthday party on July 12. The roll call was “Using up cold meat,” and a debate on the subject “Should women use make-up,” was held. The competitions resulted as follows: Amateur garden on dinner-plate, Mrs P. J. Waghorn 1. Miss Lucy Mould 2. Bloom. Mrs Hunter 1, Mrs Kay 2. The hostesses were Misses Louisa and Lucy Mould. LE DON’S BAY Miss Jean Dalglish presided over the monthly meeting of the Le Eon’s Bay Women’s Institute. Competitions resulted as follows: — Apple; Miss Joyce Crotty 1, Mrs J. G. Truman 2, Miss J. Dalglish and Miss T. Crotty (equal) 3. Blooms; Miss E. Elliott 1, Miss J. Dalglish 2, Mrs T. Crotty 3. Miss Jean Dalglish and Mrs J. Elliott, delegates to the recent conference in Christchurch, reported on the business transacted. A cake was sent to the branch by the Hazelbeck Institute, the link in England. WAIPARA The May meeting of the Waipara Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs B. Symonds presiding. A lantern lecture on reafforestation was given by Mrs Corcoran (Kaiapoi). Mrs Corcoran also gave a talk on institute matters. The results of the competitions were; —Bloom, large: Mrs Darroch 1, Mrs Conway 2. Bloom, small: Mrs McLachlan 1, Mrs Conway 2. BANKS PENINSULA GROUP * MEETING A group meeting of the Banks Peninsula branches of the Women’s Institutes was held at Duvauchelle. Mrs James Mould, group convener, and Miss E. Jacobson, voluntary organiser, presided. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit, and it was decided to make no levy this year. The Little River branch suggested points for flowers should count in the competition for the cup at the Duvauchelle show as well as points for handcraft, but it was pointed put that the cup had been given entirely for handcraft classes. ■ It was decided to abandon the drama festival this year because of the prevalence of influenza. Mrs J. Mouid was appointed group convener, it being reported that Miss J. Cradock, who had been appointed to the position was leaving the district, and could not act. Miss Fogo, Association for Country Education instructress, gave a talk on food values, which she illustrated with diagrams.
