——♦- CONDITION OF TRACKS ON SUMMIT ROAD IMPROVEMENT TO BE SOUGHT A decision to request the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. E, Semple, to have the tracks along the Summit road improved for tramping,Jvas made at the annual* meeting of the Peninsula Tramping Club last night. It was also agreed to draw the Minister s attention to the absence of a track from the Sign of the Kiwi to Evans Pass. Mr S. C. Anderson presided in the absence of the patron, the Hon. Sir K. Heaton Rhodes, from whom an apology was, received. .. , The report said that members took part in all of the trips arranged by the Railway Department, during the season, and greatly enjoyed them, there being an average attendance of about 40. On some trips the club had more than 60 trampers in its party. .Fourteen tramps were organised by the club. Many other trips were enjoyed by various members of the club, and these included week-end trips to the Peninsula, Arthur’s Pass, West Coast hostels, Stewart Island, Milford Sound, Hollyford and Eglinton Valleys, Homer tunnel, Lewis Pass, Buller Gorge, Denniston mines. Fox river, Limestone caves, Punakaiki. and Seal Island. The distance tramped on the main tramps was estimated at 150 miles. The membership increased to 100 during the: year, and the committee deemed it advisable not to exceed that number. By the sudden death of Donald Brooks the club suffered a loss which would be hard to replace. ' The financial! statement showed a credit balance of £8 6s lOd. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; president, Mr S, C. Anderson; vice-presidents, Professor R. Speight, Messrs W. Day, R. Orton Bradley, and James Deans; secretary, Miss K. Ireland; treasurer, Mr R. D. Carew; auditor, Mr C. A. E. Ferguson; club leader, Mr R. Simpson; committee, Messrs S. Vivian, C, Day and A. T. Evans, and Miss C. Buchanan. Eighteen new members were elected.
