COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL

PROGRAMME CONTINUED YESTERDAY MORE CHILDREN’S CLASSES HELD Children’s classes predominated in those heard and seen on the second day of the annual festival of the Christchurch Competitions Society yesterday. The judges are;— Vocal and instrumental music, Mr James A. Fraser (Melbourne); elocution, Mr A. F. McSkimming; fancy dancing. Miss Margaret Kerr; national dancing, Mrs R. Triggs. ,The official accompanist is Miss Agnes Shearsby. Results (competitors from Christchurch unless otherwise stated): — Piano Solo, eight and under 10—Helen Bateman 1, Pauline Young (Timaru) 2, Billie Armstrong 3. There was some good playing of hard parts in the piece, but some found the tempo puzzling, said the judge. Seann Triubhals, under 10—Colleen Coulter 1, Betty Wilson 2, Myra Hutt (Rakaia) and Rita Stanley (equal) 3. The judge was not impressed by competitors in this class. Recitation, Boys eight and under 12— Roy Holmes 1, John O’Sullivan 2, Eric Elwood 3. The judge found a lack of rhythm, and too much concentration on the words. Song for Boys, under 16—Geoffrey Hill 1, H. Harrison (Waikari) 2, M. Wootton 3. Mr Fraser was very pleased with some singers in this class. Operatic Dance, under eight—Joan Ritchie 1. Lyane Mackwell 2. Jean Hill 3. The judge was agreeably surprised with, the work done here. , Song for Girls, eight and under 12— Hilary Judkins 1, Norma Turner and Yvonne Wright (Ashburton) (equal) 2. The judge found fault with the absence of natural effects. Skipping Dance, under 13—Esma Ingram (Ashburton) 1, Joy Davies (Wellington) 2, Betty Fowke (Ashburton) 3. This was a good section in which the performers’ ease pleased the judge. Highland Fling, 10 and under 13—Russell Dowler 1, Chrissie Armstrong 2, Reta Wootton- 3. Fancy positions displeased the judge. National Dance, under 13—Norma Turner 1, Shirley Hewson 2, Bernice Day (Ashburton) 3. The judge was disappointed with this class. Recitation, Girls, 10 and under 12—Beverley Crozier and Christina Peacock (equal) 1, Norma Clark 3. Here too much concentration .on the words was criticised by the judge. Sean Triubhais, 13 and under 16—Irene Rets 1, Ngalre Brown 2, Valda Rouse 3. Grace and ease delighted the judge of these performers. Tap or Step Dance, under eight—Betty BrosnSn and Colleen Dixon (equal) 1, Betty Orange 3. This was a very enjoyable class, the judge said, and very goqd.
