CONFERRING OF TITLES

♦ FURTHER HONOURS OPPOSED LABOUR CONFERENCE RECOMMENDATION The Government was recommended by the Labour Party conference to consider the advisability of refraining from making further recommendations for the conferring of titles. The recommendation was adopted by conference on receiving the report of the policy and administrative committee, the chairman being the Hon. W. Nash (Minister for Finance). The information is contained in the “official” report issued to party members. The recommendation followed consideration of the following remit by the Auckland Amalgamated Society of Carpentefs and Joiners: “That the Government discontinue the present practice of recommending persons for titles.” A remit referred to the Government was the following from the Clinton branch:— “That the Government be recommended to consider the appointment of a New Zealander when the present Governor-General’s term 01 office expires.” '
