1940 WHEAT

XO TB» EDITOR Of TH» PRESS cjr—As an increased area is in prosI act for the 1040 wheat harvest, a brief Ifurvey of the main points are seemingly necessary. With the header-harvester coming into more general use and the growrs anxious to get the wheat into the E a cks and away as soon as possible, L question of the amount of moisure content of the wheat is of vital Lportance: 15.5 per cent, moisture at present is the maximum amount allowed. Practice shows that wheat can L safely harvested at a much higher moisture content than that allowed. IThen why put the grower to the extra rislc from storms, etc., if the provision of drying plants in centrally situated stores or/and at the flourmills? The wheat could be dried and the risk lessened to the benefit of all concerned. Another matter is the method of unloading the wheat into the flourmills and stores. Every year there is a holdup of deliveries on account of the obsolete lay-out of thd railway sidings at flourmills and stores, and the unloading methods. Improvements are long overdue. Consequently the wheat will have to stand out in the field or be carted in and stored on the farms until the railways, or the flourmills, can take it. If we are going to avoid one of the biggest muddles in the history of wheatgrowing, somebody has got to get a move on. What has the Hon. D. G. Sullivan to say?— Yours, CtC " T. E. PEARSON. Hororata, May 8, 1939.
