PLANS FOR NEW PARK
* IMPROVEMENTS AT “ABBERLEY” HOME NOT TO BE USED AS WOMEN’S CLUB Plans have been approved for extensive improvements to the grounds at Abberley Park, St. Albans, the new site purchased by the Christchurch City Council. The council has decided, on the recommendation', of its reserves committee, to take no action over the suggestion that the big home at Abberley be used for residential quarters for women. The committee reported to the council last evening that a deputation of professional and business women waited upon the committee in reference to the residence at “Abberley” being used as a women’s club. The deputation stated that for some time there had been a decided need for suitable quarters for business women. A great many had to live in rooms and flats, some of which were let at an exorbitant rent. It would be a wonderful gesture on the part of the council if it would allow fhe use of the residence at “Abberley” as a women’s club. The committee obtained a Report on the cost of repairs and renovations to the house, and it was ascertained that an expenditure of more than £7OO would be involved. The following proposals have so far been approved for alterations to the lay-out of the park. All the land occupied by fruit trees and kitchen garden will be cleared and sown in lawn; attention to shrubs and trees and their preservation wherever possible; the glasshouse to be dismantled and reerected as the nursery: outbuildings such as fowlhouses and stables to be dismantled.
