FINE SCORING IN MIXED FOURSOME EVENT

The Christchurch Club’s Easter tournament was concluded on Saturday with a mixed foursome bogey handicap for the Islington Cup. From an exceptionally large field of 220 players, two pairs, C. A. Seymour and Miss T. Ward and R. R. Bell and Mrs Bell, tied with the fine score of 2 up. The tie was decided yesterday morning and resulted in a win for Seymour and Miss Ward with a score of 1 up. C. J. Ward and Miss J. Stevenson returned an excellent card of 1 up from a 4 handicap, but they made use of only one stroke, their gross round being 73. . , . _, , The captain of the Christchurch Club, Sir Cyril Ward, congratulated the various winners, and also the staff on the fine manner on which they had conduct the tournament. The trophies were presented by Lady Ward.

MISS FLEMING WINS FOR FOURTH TIME

Golf of a high standard was played in the final of the Canterbury women’s championship match at the Shirley course on Saturday morning, when Miss V. Fleming, the holder of the title, defeated Miss Zoe Hudson, who, In the earlier rounds had beaten Miss Joyce Betts, of Nelson, and Miss Maberley Beadel, of Christchurch. Miss Hudson played splendidly in the. early stages of the game, but Miss Fleming, accurate and more experienced, steadily drew ahead on the homeward journey and won the match 5 and 3, and the championship for the fourth time. The first two holes were halved in wellplayed fours. At the short third Miss Fleming’s tee shot lay five feet from the pin, and Miss Hudson’s only a little further away. Miss Fleming holed the putt for a birdie 2 to her opponent’s 3. At the next hole Miss Fleming put her second shot out of bounds, and Miss Hudson won the hole in a bogey 5 and squared the match. At the fifth Miss Hudson holed a five foot putt for a birdie to leaer 1 up, and kept her advantage by halving the sixth in 4. She lost a chance at the seventh, where Miss Fleming hooked her drive into a bunker and played out. into another bunker at the right-of the green and took 5 for the hole. Miss Hudson duffed her approach, her first bad shot on the round, and took three putts, thus losing the hole and squaring the match. At the eighth Miss Fleming was half stymied and hit her opponent's ball into the.hole for a half. At. the ninth Miss Hudson struck trouble in, the bunker in front of the green and conceded the hole to Miss Fleming, whose tee shot was within four feet of the pin. The next two holes were halved in bogey figures. At the Pinfes (twelfth) Miss Hudson mishit her drive which found a bunker, and Miss Fleming took the hole in 4 and Increased her lead to 2 up. Miss Hudson was not now playing with the confidence that characterised her game in the earlier stages, and Miss Fleming continued to score bogeys. She won the thirteenth in 3 and the fourteenth in 4 to stand dormle 4. At the fifteenth Miss Hudson was bunkered with her tee shot, while Miss Fleming’s tee shot was within 10 feet of the pin. She won the hole in 3 and the match 5 and 3. Mr M. H. Godby was umpire. In the final of the Shirley trophy match. Mrs E. C. Chartres, who was conceding three strokes, beat Mrs J. B. Nicoll, of Ashburton, 3 and 1. Mrs Chartres was 2 up at the turn, but Mrs Nicoll won the tenth and eleventh to square the match. Mrs Chartres again drew ahead and was dormie 3 after playing the fifteenth. Mrs Nicoll won the long sixteenth, but lost the seventeenth, thus giving Mrs Chartres the match, 3 and 1. Miss J. Wilkin was umpire.
