UEW GOODS SHED AT RANGIORA

WORK NEARLY FINISHED AT STATION STORAGE SPACE OF 3200 SQUARE FEET

The new railway goods shed at Rangiora will soon be completed. The material for the beaming of the roof has only recently been supplied, but the whole of the roofing is now finished. The foreman in charge of the construction work stated that possibly a record in roofing work had been established by the men engaged on the b Untn the old shed is demolished work on one wall will not be practicable. The flooring is the major work yet to be finished. Bitumen flanked by reinforced concrete is being used, and the storage space is to b: 3200 square feet. It is confidently expected that the shed will be in use in two weeks.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING AT CHEVIOT

Harvest thanksgiving services were conducted at Cheviot and Spotswood Presbyterian Churches on Sunday by • the Rev. R. Leishman. The churches had been decorated by the ladies’ guild with flowers, fruit, and produce. Mrs T Stevenson was organist at the morning service at Spotswood, and Mrs F. E. 5 Flute in the evening at Cheviot, when a quartet was sung by Mesdames B Leishman and G. B. Orchard, Miss C. Rowe, and the Rev. R. Leishman. The produce was auctioned on Mon- . day evening, a satisfactory sum being raised.

FEWER CRIMINAL CASES

COURT STATISTICS FOR RANGIORA Fewer criminal cases were dealt with by the Rangiora Magistrate’s Court for the quarter ending March' 31, 1939, than in the corresponding quarter last year.

Figures supplied by the Court for the quarter yesterday, with figures for the 1938 quarter in parenthesis, were:— Total sittings, civil 6 (6), criminal 6 (8), plaints entered 53 (46), amount sued for £327 5s 9d (£677 4s 6d), summonses 39 (43), judgment summonses 14 (23), foreign processes received 21 (18); criminal cases 15 (22), cases during quarter 42 (43), amount claimed £2OO Is 7d (£529 5s 2d), amount recovered. £IBB 2s 7d (£472 14s 8d).

BOY SCOUT TROUP AT RANGIORA

MR B. R. BANFIELD ELECTED SCOUTMASTER

Mr B. R. Banfield was unanimously elected scoutmaster of the Rangiora Boy Scout Troup at the annual meeting of the committee and officers on Monday night. A special vote of thanks was accorded the North Canterbury branch of the Farmers’ Co-op. for the free use of a room as a training centre. A small credit balance was shown by the treasurer, and a drive for funds was discussed. A motion was passed that a “Friend of the Scouts” circle be started, members of which would contribute 2s 6d a year. Scoutmaster Jennings gave details of the annual Easter camp, at. which 185 boys, 14 of whom would be from Rangiora, would be under canvas.

Officers elected were:—President, Mr E. K. Banfield; vice-presidents, Drs. L. M. King and C. S. McPhail, Mr G. W. Watson; secretary, Mr T. Henderson; honorary physician. Dr. L. M. King. A number of officers from Christchurch attending the meeting included Metropolitan Commissioner Mclvor, District Commissioner C. Thomas, Lady Cubmasters B. and E. Thomas, Scoutmaster S. Carter, District Scoutmaster J. G. Jennings. Others present were Mesdames T. Henderson, C. Thomas, Messrs W. C. McCracken, C. Ironside, T. Henderson, H. Earl, and J. Jennings. PROCEEDS FROM POPPY DAY The Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association will benefit by about £SO from proceeds of Poppy Day. Street sales on Monday brought in £4B 19s 9d. There is still about £5 to come in., The response compares favourably with last year, when about £45 was raised.

MISSIONARY UNION AT SOUTHBRIDGE

At the first meeting for this year of the Southbridge branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, the Rev. L. G. B. Whitehead presiding, sympathy was extended to several members who had suffered bereavements. Mission letters were read and the resignation of Mrs C. H. Chapman as secretary was accepted with regret. She was thanked for her work and Mrs F. W. Scott was elected to the office. An interesting letter was read from Mrs R. R. Adair, formerly of Southbridge, wlfo is now in the- United States. An address was given by Mr Whitehead, and a good ■ collection of jams and’ preserves was received for the Christchurch Presbyterian orphanages. /•

PRESENTATION TO RETIRING OFFICER

A total of about £BO has now been acknowledged for the Dr. T. A. Will Memorial Fund in North Canterbury by the honorary secretary (Mr W. C. Prosser) and honorary treasurer (Mr J. M. Fraser), and it is believed that further sums not yet acknowledged will bring the fund to a total of nearly £IOO.

Superintendent G. McGregor, who has retired after 45 years’ service with the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade, was the guest of the Brigade members at a social evening held in the Brigades’ social room on Monday evening. Mr H. C. Revell (chairman), Messrs H. Rinaldi, W. E. Olds and H. L. Whiteman, of the Kaiapoi Fire Board, the Mayor, the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery, and Mr S. F. Marshall, secretary of the Christchurch Fire Board, were also present. Former-Superintendent McGregor was .presented with an art brass log box bearing the following inscription: —“Presented to Superintendent G. McGregor by the members of the Kaiapoi Fire Board and, officers and members of the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade on his retirement after 45 years’ service. 31.3.39.” Mr Revell, chairman of the Fire Board, who made the presentation, said that the evening had been arranged to say good-bye to Superintendent McGregor after his fine record of 45 years’ fire brigade service, which must be nearly a record for the Dominion. The enthusiasm shown by him in brigade work was an excellent example, and would be an inspiration to the younger members. Presenting the gift, he expressed the hope that he would enjoy many years of good health in his retirement. Superintendent McGregor, who was greeted with musical honours, thanked the members of the board and of the brigade for their gift. He said that he had always been keenly interested in fire brigade work and told some early reminiscences of the brigade, fire brigade demonstrations and conferences.

CROQUET SOUTHBRIDGB CLUB

Several competitions were held at a social afternoon on the Southbridge Croquet Club’s green, the winners being Mesdames R. G. Bishop, J. Moorhead, H. Parkin, G. Goulden, W. C. Hickman, and Misses H. Bishop and K. Sloan. The president, Mrs T. H. Bennett, thanked all who had assisted the club during the season. WEATHER IN MARCH RETURNS AT CULVERDEN The lowest rainfall at Culverden for March since 1935, when .75 inches was registered,- was recorded by the postmaster (Mr C. E. Rose) last month. Only 1.22 inches was recorded, compared with 1.44 inches in 1938 and 2.24 inches in 1937. Rain fell on six day's this year, against 12 last year and 10 in 1937. The highest fall was recorded on March 8. of 54 points. The total rainfall for the three months is 2.73 inches, compared with 6.88 inches for 1938 and 4.66 inches for 1937. The highest temperature for the month registered in Culverden was 80 degrees on March 14. SOUTHBRIDGE TOWN BOARD FINANCES REPORTED TO BE SOUND Reporting to the Southbridge Town Board at its monthly meeting on Monday evening the clerk stated that the financial year began with a credit of £327158 d, and ended with a credit of £328 13s lid, so that practically the full year’s revenue had been spent. During the current financial year the board would have a heavy commitment for the paving of the main street. A letter from’ the Springs-Ellesmere Power Board explained the steps taken to improve the street lighting in the town district. Members commented that an improvement in the lighting had been observed. Mr H. G. Hubbard was appointed the board’s representative on the executive of the Canterbury. Patriotic Fund. Permission was granted to Mr T. H. Bennett to have a brick building erected on his premises in High street. It was decided to make a contribution to the deficit on the Springs-Ellesmere Fitness Week demonstration.

The Mayor expressed the appreciation of the borough of the fine record of service given by Mr McGregor. Messrs Whiteman and Olds, of the Fire Board, and, Marshall also spoke. PERSONAL NOTES KAIAPOI Messrs R. Fendall, F. Bryden, and A. Green, of the Kaiapoi Defence Rifle Club, will leave to-morrow to attend the annual championship meeting of the Otago Rifle Association, to be held at Dunedin during Easter. KAIKOURA Miss M. Sharpe and Miss M. Malcolmson are the .guests of Mr and Mrs H. A. Fairweather, Puhi Puhi Peaks, Kaikoura. LADBROOKS Mr and Mrs A. Pickering, ALTERATIONS TO WAIAU POST OFFICE The extensive alterations which have been made to the Waiau Post Office have now been completed and the new rooms were used for the first time at the beginning of the week The offices are now much more convenient for both the public and the Post Office staff.

LAWN TENNIS JUNIOR CLUB EVENTS AT RANGIORA Semi-finals and finals of junior events in the Rangiora Lawn Tennis Club’s championship for the 1938-39 season have been completed. Anniverary services of the Spring-; ston Methodist Church were held ort Sunday. The ; preacher. :for the morning service was-“the Rev. H. A flag 500 evening arranged by members of the Springston branch of the Labour Party was held in the Public Hall. The most successful players were Mr and Mrs A. Moreland and Mr C. Brown. Consolation prizes were awarded to Messrs L. Palmer, O. 'Hoskin, and F. Lancaster.

AMBERLEY CLUB OPENS SEASON

The opening'of the Amberley Golf Club’s season. was held on Saturday, the president, Mr W. A. Parsons, driving the first ball. There was a good attendance of members and friends, and the newly formed Glenmark Club was well represented. The flag match played during the afternoon resulted in a tie between Mrs_J, D. Boyce and W. Wade, and Mrs W. J. Martyn and. Mrs R. C. Clifford. In a decision by lot Mrs Boyce and Wade were declared the winners. At the completion of the competition those present were the guests of Mrs Parsons at afternoon tea. CHEVIOT CLUB! The Cheviot’ Golf Club opened its season in splendid weather on Saturday. There was a good attendance; at the annual jam afternoon at Cusf in aid of St. Anne's Home. Mrs Turner (Christchurch) ■-gave an interesting talk. Songs were sung by Mrs O’Malley and Mrs Chambers' won a competition. ■'
