RACING AND TROTTING

SPECIAL EDITION WINS CLASSIC

FAST TIMES RECORDED AT ADDINGTON

ASHBURTON CLUB’S MEETING

In ideal weather and dh a fast track, the Ashburton Trotting Club bn Saturday provided a good dress rehearsal for the Easter carnival of trotting, Which will open at Addington this week. It was a day of very fast times and spirited betting, and the totalisator investments amounted to £34,275 30s. an increase of £9136 on the £25,139 10s handled at Ashburton 12 months ago. Special interest was taken in the race for the New Zealand Futurity Stakes, which attracted a fine field of three-year-olds, and resulted in a clearcut victory lor Special Edition, a gelding always possessed of plenty of speed, but uncertain in his barrier manners. This time he began steadily and was always well placed in behind the leaders. In the run home he showed marked superiority and his 3min 33 3-5 see for a mile and five furlongs was a record. The favourite, Aldershot failed to run on, being the pacemaker lor a mile and a quarter. The state of the track and the merit of the different performances may be gauger* from a study of the following table shoeing the winners, assessments. time - registered, and the improvement made:— . NOTES ON THE RACING

Outsiders Fill Places

A dividend of more than three-fifths of a century on the win machine and more than a score on the place rewarded- backers of Chateau in the Allenton Handicap. Margin, who finished second, paid close on double figures for a place. Altogether, it,was a disastrous start for speculators. Margin and Axworth were the quickest of a poor lot of beginners, but soon the field was well strung out, and Axworth took up the role of pacemaker from Chateau, Co-Director, and Great Mountain, and with half the journey covered the order was Axworth, Margin. Chateau, Co-Director,' Mowjtaia, Joaaai, ing Samel

Bey. The majority were well out of the race at this stage, and three furlongs from home the race was between Chateau, Margin, and Axworth. In the run to the post Chateau outstayed Margin, and in third place was Axworth, followed by Great Mountain, Joanna, and Lady Ede. Chateau, who had previously shown sohne promise as a pacer, stayed on well, while a novice in Margin, by Maxegin, gave promise of winning more races. Axworth had had enough two furlongs from home, but he decisively beat the remainder.

The Favourite Fails

Maekscot, the favourite for the Improvers’ Handicap, was the first away from the barrier, and he made most of the running, only to fail in the last two furlongs. Maekscot, Clive Brook, Swift Lady, and Grattanita were the first to begin, while Loyal Key and Royal Surprise lost ground. With a mile and a quarter covered the leaders were Mackscot, Sunworthy, Clive Brook, Gfattanita, and Swift Lady, but at this stage Accountant, who had lost ground, put in a very fast run, which took him within easy distance of the leaders. He was second to Maekscot at the straight entrance, but closely following was Loyal Rey, and Royal Surprise was making up ground. Loyal Rey and Accountant had a short, sharp tussle, from which the former emerged victorious, and he went on ■ to win decisively, while Accountant held on to beat Royal Surprise, Erin’s Lad, and Maekscot!

There was a lot of merit in the winner's performance, and the time, 4min 31sec, frdm a smin Isec mark, showed that the pace was on all the way. But for losing ground at a critical stage of the race. Accountant might have made matters still more difficult for the winner. Royal Surprise was a long way back in the early stages, but put in telling work over the last halfmile. Three-year-old Classic Aldershot and Special Edition monopolised the betting in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes, and while the latter won in the manner of a good horse, Aldershot let his backers down, when he faded with three furlongs to go. Aldershot was the quickest to begin, and before two furlongs had been covered he was showing the way to Honestus, Shadow Boy, Braw Lass, Special Edition, and Coquette. Braw Lass made a tangle rounding the top turn, but she quickly struck her hopples again, and passing the stands she was in close attendance on Aldershot, while following were Honestus, Shadow Boy, Coquette, Wainoni Girl, Shadow Son, and Special Edition. Three furlongs from home Aldershot faded, and Braw Lass, Honestus, Coquette, and Special Edition were first into the straight. A furlong from home Coquette and Braw Lass were in front, but Special Edition finished in great style, and fairly outstayed the remainder, while Braw Lass with a final burst deprived Coquette of second place. Honestus, Wainoni Girl, and Shadow Boy followed the placed horses.

Special Edition has always possessed plenty of speed, but failure to leave the barrier correctly has militated against his chances. This time he was" well placed from the start, and took full advantage of the excellent pace-mak-ing. The time, Smin 33 3-ssee, represented a great performance for a three-year-old. Braw Lass, who had not been seriously considered in the classics, ran a capital race, and is apparently a stayer, while Coquette lived up to her record for consistency. She is a grand little pacer. Busted Flush, Sealand, and Centaurus made mistakes, and Scenic Gem fell, \ Colonel Grattan in Form Colonel Grattan returned a doublefigure dividend when he won the Durbar Handicap, a surprisingly good return for such a consistent pacer. He was the quickest to begin and he led all the way at a pace that would have taxed the ability of even the champion pacers. From start to finish this .was a fine race. When the field settled down Colonel Grattan took up the running from Fine Art, Silver Guy, Horse Power, Frisco Boy, Aide de Camp. Ferry Post, and Marsceres, and there was little change-until half a mile from home,, when Sandusky came fast on the outside. Fine Art made a skip three furlongs from home, but he lost no ground, and he followed Colonel Grattan into the straight ahead of Sandusky and Horse Power. Colonel Grattan stayed on too well for Fine Art, who, however, had a clear advantage over Sandusky. Next to finish were Horse Power, Southern Smile, and Gallant Knight.

Colonel Grattan won with something in hand, and could have given a bit more had he been asked a question. The time, 4min 20 l-ssec, from 4min 31sec, shows a true run race, and the speed found weak spots in the majority. Fine Art went his best race since November, but was fairly beaten. Sandusky’s form was instructive, and he looks likely to win a race in the near future. He is a greatly improved pacer. Horse Power had every chance, but just failed against really good pacers. Silver Guy broke early' and Frisco Boy, Marsceres, Southern Smile, and Gallant Knight all raced well; Ferry Post did not do so well as generally expected. Chatraos Wins At the finish of the Autumn Handicap, Chatmos was a very easy winner, but up till 100 yards from the post he was under a hard drive to keep ahead of Rowi, who was always well placed. Thornworthy was the quickest to begin, but very shortly Chatmos raced to the lead, and with Thornworthy, Don Acron, and Rowi following,, he led past the stand, while Pecunia, rapidly making up ground, was in a handy position. Chatmos continued to set a merry pace with Pecunia and Thornworthy handy, while Ochiltree put in a telling run that took her within range of the leaders. Into the straight led Chatmos with Rowi and Ochiltree next. The last-named broke and lost all chance, and Chatmos and Rowi drew out. The latter faded 100 yards from home, and Chatmos won very easily. Pecunia was in third place, with the rest hopelessly outclassed. A Speedy Trotter

Mohican gave a finished display of trotting is toe Stewards' Handicap

and although he left his feet early in the race, he then settled down and won in the man.ier of a good trotter. He is well above the average, and this success may not be his last. Sphinx was actually the quickest to begin, but Mohican soon raced past him only to go to a break after two furlongs. Escalado then took over the pace-making and Mohican, settling down, followed him, the pair being well ahead of the rest, which were headed by Sphinx, Bon Chance, Anna’s Voyage, and Listowel. In the meantime, Gerfalcon had appeared in the picture. Escalado continued to hit a merry pace with Mohican in behind, and as the last round was commenced they were followed by Sphinx, Bon Chance, Listowel, and Gerfalcon. At the straight entrance Mohican made his effort, but it was not until the last 100 yards that he gained the upper hand. He finished in great style with a clear-cut victory. Gerfalcon, trotting soundly, was third, to record 3min 19sec, and he was followed by Sphinx and Shadeland. A Fast Run Race

Dancing Pirate won the • Harvest Handicap in the fast time of 3min 16 4-ssec, from a 3min 34sec mark, and he made an exhibition of his field over the later stages of the race. By his display he proved himself a very smart pacer—one likely to reach better company than he has yet raced in. Allworthy set out at a good pace and carried on from Dancing Pirate, Rhinegold, Fortex, Palomar, and Queen’s County, and there was little of moment in the race until the last half-mile when Dancing Pirate took over from Palomar and Fortex. In the straight, Dancing Pirate had little difficulty. He easily defeated Palomar, while folic /ing were Fortex and Evora. Under sufferance the last-named gained fourth place. Kilrea ran a fair race and may do better in the near future. C-old Bank showed promise. Van Derby In Action

A good deal of interest was taken in the Rakaia Handicap, because of the first appearance in the South Island of the Australian-bred Van Derby. While he failed to run into a place he showed enough speed to suggest that he is in. the champions’ class. Loyal Pat, well placed all the way, outstayed Attain in the run home and won well.

Colonel Axworthy led out from Attain, Oversight, Full Hand, Loyal Pat, and Lady Slipper, with Gay Avon handy. This was the leading division throughout, although when the last half-mile commenced Van Derby, with a great show of speed, joined the bunch, and Full Hand and Colonel Axworthy began to feel the strain. The pace was fast as the field rounded the top turn, and at the straight entrance Loyal Pat and Attain were together ahead of Gay Avon, with Colonel Axworthy and Van Derby in attendance. Loyal Pat always had too much in reserve for Attain, and he won by two lengths, with Gay Avon only half a length away.

The winner was always nicely placed, and was not called on for a serious effort until the last three furlongs. It marked the second success of the afternoon for the R. J. Humphreys-!. Pringle combination. Van Derby would need to have broken all records to have won, but his form was instructive.

LEADING SIRES

BEAU FERE’S RECORD

Hunting Song, champion sire of the Dominion for the last six seasons, is likely to be deposed from this position this season. At present Beau Pere holds a strong lead on the winning sires’ list, and Vaals is also in front of Hunting Song. With eight months of the season gone, Beau Peqe, whose oldest progeny are now three, is in a commanding position. He should have no trouble in holding his place over the Easter racing, and a number of his progeny should continue to pick up prizes for him during the winter. The following are the sire statistics for races in the Dominion, as compiled by the New Zealand Racing Conference, up to the conclusion of the recent Wellington meeting:—

Among these sires, Acre, Chief Ruler, Robespierre, Balboa, and Limond are now dead, and Beau Pere and Lackham are ho longer in the Dominion. Bulandshar’s total is made up of his first crop of two-year-olds. Hunting Song still has a chance of regaining the lead, as his progeny always do well in the winter, because of their ability to handle soft ground, but the odds are now against his heading the list for the seventh successive time. Even if Hunting Song should approach Beau Pere, there is still Vaals to hold off, as the offspring by the Valais horse are little inferior to the Hunting Songs in heavy (ground.
