EMPIRE-MINDEDNESS

“APATHY TO TRADITION AND SENTIMENT” . " •

The Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society entertained Mir ; D. Hope Johnston, founder of the New Zealand Founders’ Society, and a member of the Royal Empire Society since 1896 (since when he founded two committees of the society) at a luncheon yesterday. Mr Hope Johnston said: “There "has been a falling off in Empire-minded-ness during the last 40 years. I do not say that when the time , comes people will be found wanting. But there is great apathy among" he younger generation in Australia : and New Zealand about anything of historical and sentimental interest. In Australia they have more respect for Bradman when he has made 300. runs. Women are better than men in preserving traditions.”
