Mr Melville Jameson Gray, 91-years-old bachelor, of Bowerswell, Perth, was married quietly at St. Peter’s Church, on the morning of February 21, to Miss Ada Katharine Julius, fourth daughter of the late Dr. Churchill Julius, formerly Primate of New Zealand. The Rev. J. Jones, rector of Marlborough, conducted the wedding ceremony. There were two witnesses, Captain and Mrs P. A. Elworthy, of Rainscombe House, Oaro. The bride wore a brown suit with a hat to match, and short fur coat, The bridegroom, who looked exceedingly fit had a buttonhole of lilies-of-the-valley. Met in New Zealand Mr Gray met his bride 40 years ago when he was a sheepfarmer in New Zealand, and has never lost touch with her since.* The wedding was arranged a few weeks ago, on the arrival of Miss Julius from New Zealand. Mr Gray, who was bom in Perth, ran away to sea at the age of 19, and sailed round the world in an 800-ton windjammer before settling down to make a fortune in New Zealand. He has been round the world five times. In an interview recently he said that it was his desire, and his bride’s, to have a quiet wedding in the country and to go back to Bowerswell to the house in which he was born. “I hope to celebrate my centenary as a happily married man,” he remarked. “Of course, one cannot look too far ahead when one reaches my age. yet I hope to have many years of happiness during my married life. GROUP MEETING TWO ADDRESSES GIVEN The group meeting in Christchurch to study cultural contributions of Pacific peoples in preparation for the forthcoming Pan-Pacific Women’s Conference met in the Federation of University Women’s Club rooms. There was a good attendance of members. The leader, Mrs F. J. T. Grigg outlined the conditions under which delegates would be chosen to represent New Zealand at the conference. The secretary,- Mrs G. Jobberns, then gave a talk on the history of the islands of the Dutch East Indies, including such details as their physical features, comparative populations and forms of government, and the part played by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. T, Grigg, who described some of the customs of the various peoples inhabiting the islands of Java, Celebes, Borneo, Lamratra, and Bali, mentioning in particular the Minangkabau matnarchate of Sumatra, one of the few such known in the world. ,The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J.
