RACING AND TROTTING

TURF GOSSIP At Invercargill The following Riccarton horses are included in the nominations for the Riverton Racing Club’s Easter meeting:—Redolent, Garonne. Night Dress, Mungaloon, Asset, and Waitaka. Last Year at Waimate Placegettors at last year's meeting at Waimate were:—Studholme Highweight. Drinkup, Poniard, Pink Comet; Trial Plate. Steer Clear, Sunny Dawn, Lady Middleham: Waimate Cup, Rebel Lad. Salient Knight, Silver Sight; Waitangi Hack Handicap; Bellerive, Nolana. Amount; President’s Handicap, Alma. Janet Gaynor, Acceptable; Stewards’ Hack Handicap, Balmenter, Atalanta Lass, Dracula. Track Work at Riccarton Although there was a large amount of useful work executed at Riccarton yesterday, fast work was restricted, the main interest being centred in the efforts of horses racing at Waimate tomorrow, and at Oamaru next week. The No. 6 grass and plough were in use.

On the Plough Cocksure and Kilrobe ran five furlongs in Imin Isec. The former appears to be in advanced order for Easter racing. Palmyra easily accounted for Silver Sight over six furlongs in Imin 17 2- the last three in 39sec. The latter has never been a good track worker, and may do well in the Waimate Cup. in which he ran third last year to Rebel Lad and Salient Knight. Rebel Chief and Ferriby ran five furlongs in Imin 1 3-ssec, the last three in 37sec. Real Lady, picked up by Shangri Lu at five furlongs, covered six furlongs in Imin 17sec, the last three in 38 2-ssec. Cape Gabo galloped seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec. He is likely to be in keen demand if started in the highweight event at Waimate. On the Grass Plumage sprinted three furlongs smartly in 37sec. and Maroha and Dinah Duh ran half a mile in 49 l-ssec, Comus taking 49 2-ssec, and Swingtime and Phenomenal 49 3-ssec. Studley Royal, who is due to race at Westport, covered six furlongs in Imin 16 4-ssec. the last three in 38 l-ssec. Pladie and Bright Prospect finished together after galloping six furlongs in Imin 16 l-ssec, the last three in 37 3-

Jumping Wexford Bridge went once round over the steeplechase fences at a sound pace, and Leopardstown jumped four brush hurdles satisfactorily. Biding at Waimate Some riding engagements made for the Waimate fixture to-morrow are as follows:—V. Barrington, Dranoel, Real Lady, Dinah Dhu, Silver Sight; D. O'Connor. Cape Gabo (High-weight); J. Murfitt. Bright Prospect (Highweighti; L. Johnston, Bright Prospect. Queen Dorothy; A. Leach, Pladie; J. Jennings, Kilrobe, Ferriby, Night Dress, Asset: G. Watson, Argentic, Argravate: C. Stokes. Plumage; J. Lewis, Golden Chest: W. Connor. Silver Sliptier. Pink Bird; R. Register, Jewish Lad. A Fit Colt

One of the most attractive trials at Trentham on Tuesday was that of Beau Vite, who comfortably accounted for the improving Gayest Son over five furlongs in Imin 4sec, the last half taking 50sec. Beau Vite has not raced since he won on the concluding day of the Trentham summer meeting, but has done well in the meantime, and has developed into a solid horse. His meeting with Baran and the best of the handicap class two-year-olds in the Pacific Handicap to-day will be one of the day’s features. He will be ridden by H. Wiggins. Dual Engagements Amigo, Mittie, and Haughty Winner are engaged in both the Thompson Handicap and Railway Handicap today. Decisions have not yet been reached by the connexions of Mittie and Haughty Winner as to which race these horses will contest, but it is practically certain that Amigo will run in the Railway. Mittie’s programme will be governed largely by the riders available. but she worked seven furlongs on Tuesday with Queen of Song, which suggests that the Thompson Handicap may ultimately be her mission. She would be a strong prospect if she could reproduce her August Riccarton form. Shoulder Soreness Dungarvan has not been himself lately, and in a track gallop on Tuesday with Galteemore and Gay Son he ran below form. He has been troubled with soreness in a shoulder, and it does not improve his chance in the Thompson Handicap, in which he is to be ridden by P. Burgess. Classic Candidate The two-year-old Beaulivre, a double winner at the Wellington summer meeting, since when he has not started, worked half a mile on Tuesday in 49 4-ssec. and completed his task attractively, with his stablemate. Globe Trotter, also doing it well. Beaulivre is not engaged to-day, his mission being the North Island Challenge Stakes, an event which has been won by a two-year-old for the last lour years in succession. A Strong Team J. H. Jeflerd’s team were among the earliest visitors to arrive at Trentham, and they all look well. Though he has not raced since the New Zealand Cup meeting, the Bulandshar colt Baran is well forward, and will add much interest to the Pacific Handicap, in which he is to be ridden by B. H. Morris. He is also engaged in the Challenge Stakes to-morrow. Injuries have kept this colt off the scene since November, but he promised to be good class in the spring, and it would occasion no surprise if he were to come through his racing this week with a substantial addition to his already good record. Rakahanga is in nice order for her Railway Handicap engagement. This filly won brilliantly at the summer meeting, and appears to be one of the best prospects from the middle of the handicap. Serenata, who is not engaged till tomorrow, is another member of Jefferd’s team. This sister to Russian Ballet was a winner at Manawatu at New Year. Another member of the Jefferd team is Regale, a Myosotis two-year-old. A Chance to Recover Nuffield is being given a long respite in the hope that the rest will strengthen the suspensory ligament that has been troubling him for some time. Early in the new season he will do a light term at the Tarwyn Park Stud, New South Wales, where Hall Mark also stands, and then he will be returned to J. Holt for another race preparation.

TROTTING NOTES

Cheviot Trotting: Club The Cheviot Trotting Club with its annual meeting to-morrow fills the break between the more important fixtures and followers of the light-harness sport may be assured of good entertainment at a meeting to which transport is easy and good sport is assured. The Cheviot Club has laboured under the difficulties that have to be faced by all pioneers of the sport; but it has made rapid progress and when the Racing Commission decides on a general reallottment —and a general increase—of totalisator permits, Cheviot may be in line for consideration. There is a general-demand for extra totalisator permits in New Zealand, but the more prosperous clubs must be prepared to run two-day meetings and not confine their activities to week-ends. Cheviot to-morrow will probably provide the best day’s sport in its history, and the attendance should break all records. The win-and-place system is popular and this time the investments should constitute a record. Patrons of the meeting may be assured that the events will be kept well up to time and the totalisator will be closed at the time advertised in the programme. The Cheviot Trotting Club meeting is one that will be popular in Canterbury trotting circles. Wyndbam Juvenile Stakes

Great interest is being shown in the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes, the second three-year-old pacing classic of the Southland season to be run at the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. A field of eight is assured and as several of the juveniles have shown themselves to be more than useful a first-class contest is promised. The favourite will doubtless be Ned Worthy, but others in Icilma, Aidus, Jack Bond and Brown Cloud are all capable of making a race of it. Ned Worthy has trained on the right way since he won the Winton Juvenile Stakes in impressive style. On that occasion he appeared to be beaten half a mile from home but he finished brilliantly and few three-year-olds have shown the stamina of the Wyndham pacer. At the recent Invercargill meeting he put up an excellent trial as a result of which he is likely to be sent out at a short price on Saturday. Ned Worthy comes from a family of fine winners and he is likely to prove himself as good as any of the number.

In the Winton classic Icilma was regarded as the unlucky runner as she tangled at the top of the straight, and then finished third. More patiently handled at Wyndham she may be capable of making a great race of it with the favourite. She possesses all the early brilliance of stock sired by Rey de Oro, and she is a filly of whom great things may later be expected. It, is likely that she will be driven by W. Todd on Saturday. Brown Cloud is one whose prospects are being discussed. He was confidently supported in a big novice field at the Invercargill meeting in a race over a mile and five furlongs, but was one of several to have his chance wrecked at the start. He is evidently a good stayer. If he had worked well enough to show up in a field of novices, he should not have _ great difficulty in holding his own in the Wyndham classic. Jack Bond is now trained by T. Wallis at Winton and earlier in the season he was rated as one of the best of his age, but he contracted a chill before the Winton classic, and was not seen at his best. At the same time he ran a useful race but was well beaten into fourth place. Reports credit him with having worked well, and if produced at his best he will have a big following, as he stays on particularly well.

Reyburn was not very forward when raced at V/inton, but Aidus will attract attention. She finished a good second to Ned Worthy in the Winton classic after setting a hot pace. She is a game filly and can be expected to do everything right. She has not raced since her placing at Winton, but as a member of J. Walsh’s stable she will not lack anything on the score of condition. A Hard Proposition Lustral, though he never looked better than when he went out to contest the high-weight at Carterton on Saturday. showed that old faint-hearted-ness at the business end, and it was a surprise to most when he was left in second place by the judge, though the angle probably deceived those off the line. The Tidal gelding will have the services of A. E. Ellis in the Rimu High-weight at Trentham to-day, and

WAIMATE RACES

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME

The Waimate Racing Club will hold its annual race meeting on the Waimate racecourse to-morrow, and everything promises for one of the most successful fixtures in the history of the club. TRAINING JOCKEYS A SCHEME LIKELY (By CARBINE.) Discussing a while ago racing’s great problem of the future—the ensuring of an adequate supply of competent jockeys—l remarked that no one need be surprised if authority gave evidence shortly that it was alive to the necessity of taking action if a- suitable and workable scheme could be evolved.

It is quite likely something official will be heard of very soon. The details of the scheme to be considered are not known, but it is understood that the plan will create considerable interest, and those who have an idea of the outline are hopeful that it will succeed. It can be taken for granted that the services of some of the best riders in the country will be utilised, and it is understood that riders who have been approached are most willing to help. Probably something of the kind would have been done years ago had New Zealand not been so decentralised. Seemingly, it is realised now that even that obstacle must be overcome, and it is to be hoped that if the scheme has reasonable merit it will be given a trial. Experience would find any defects the scheme might possess, and improvements could be made from time to time. WELLINGTON E.C. TO-DAY’S PROGRAMME PROSPECTS DISCUSSED ITHE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. March 16. Prospects are bright for the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Trentham to-morrow. The weather remains fine and bright, and the going, after continuous watering and the recent rain, is in first-class order, with the sting well out of it. Outside the principal events, which to-morrow will be the Thompson and Railway Handicaps, the St. Leger Stakes for three-year-olds, and the Pacific Handicap for two-year-olds, the class is not so strong as usual in Trentham fields. Betting will be win and place.

The form horses in the high-weight are Prime Quality, Bumble, and Lustral. Shy might stage an unexpected return to form. Sir Nigel also has a chance if he runs to his Woodville form, where he divided Mataroa and Bumble. An improving three-year-old like Prime Quality should be hard to beat, and the favourites may be Prime Quality. Bumble, and Lustral. The field in the Trial Plate (20) is the largest on the card, but the form is moderate. Those that have done best in public include Improvident, Ruling Star, Jacynth, Barabtias. Parian, and Titter. The best backed may be Improvident, Jacynth, and Ruling Star. Beaupartir is assured of solid favouritism in the St. Leger; but surprises are often in store in such events. Coronation is capable of extending the favourite if he runs to the limit of his capabilities. Old Bill, Capricious, and Peerless are all reliable over the distance if their form to date is any criterion. Most money may go on Beaupartir and Coronation. The Pacific Handicap this year does not Include the leading juveniles, as High Caste is in Australia and Beaulivre is not running. In their absence there is a wide range of talent from which to choose. There are certain to be several improvers in the race, and among those likely to attract attention are Baran, Submission, Moorsotis, Beau Vite, and Pear] of Asia. According to reliable authorities at Awapuni one of the most improved youngsters there is Vascones, and he may be capable of bringing off a surprise. He won recently at Woodville. where his form was a great improvement on anything he had previously shown. The favourites may be Beau Vite, Moorsotis, and Baran. In the absence of Smoke Screen from the Thompson Handicap (he is being reserved for the Challenge Stakes) the public may have a little difficulty in deciding upon the favourite. Taurangi has come into favour since she galloped well this morning; but her chance .rests more on her previous good form, and she should be hard to beat with a good run. Trench Fight has been pleasing his connexions much better lately on the tracks, while a mile is his best distance. Royal Chief takes time to find his feet, but his class will carry him a long way, and if at all handy over the last half he can be depended upon to put in a strong claim at the right end. Haughty Winner is almost certain to run here, and he has s great chance on his form, and Amigo will also run if a suitable rider can be engaged. The Bigot may be the best of the light-weights. The fancied division may include Taurangi, Trench Fight, and Haughty Winner. In the Tinakorl Hack the best form prospects include Great Flight. Ecstatic. White Gold, and Trebor; blit the win of Blonde Princess at Ellerslie earlier in the season gives her a chance of springing a surprise. Ecstatic has improved, and the favourites may be Ecstatic, Great Flight, and Blonde Princess. Suleiman, who has developed into a strong and powerful horse, is likely to be the public fancy in the Railway Handicap. He galloped well- this rporning. Outside him there is a group of form horses closely bound, not only by recent form, but through their running here in January. They are Counterblast, Lady Ina, Rakahanga, and Florence Mills. Amigo, who will be ridden by Goulsbro if he starts in this race, must have good prospects. Density won a hack double here brilliantly in January; but will have a hard task to make this grade. Top Row might improve. Money may come for Suleiman. Counterblast, and X-ady Inst.
