MAN’S DISAPPEARANCE FROM SHIP

VERDICT GIVEN AT INQUEST IFrom Our Own Reporter. - ! WESTPORT, March 13. A verdict that Herbert Andrew Scollay was found drowned, there being no evidence to show how or by what means he came to be in the sea, was returned by the Coroner (Mr G. Taylor) at the inquest held to-day. Evidence was given by Tom Rowlands, captain, George M. Schofield, first officer, and Peter C. Saunders, second officer, of the Westport Coal Company’s vessel Kaimai, that Scollay was missed when the vessel was one and a half hours from Westport on its way to Auckland, and a fruitless search was made when the ship was turned about. Captain Rowlands said that he signalled the station at Westport and did not receive any reply for a time. He later wirelessed Wellington. He said everything was done to locate the missing man. Evidence was also given by William McNay, Frederick Anderson, find Dermot Joseph Harris that 'Scollay was present on the ship when it left Westport and that he was in a sober condition. They said that the body recovered on the beach at Cape Foulwind was that of Scollay. They could not account for Scollay falling off the ship, and said that no call was made for help. Harry Sutherland gave evidence of finding the body and Constable George Taylor of its recovery.
