ROAD TRANSPORT LICENCES

PROTEST BY BULLER OPERATORS ISSUE FOR TEMPORARY WORK

A plea for some restriction on the granting of temporary licences to operators in the Buller district when there were idle licensed operators available for any work required, was made by members of the Buller branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Association at a meeting on Saturday. It was claimed that in fairness to the existing operators, who had to take the good with the bad, some restriction should be made in the granting of temporary licences. It was considered unfair that while licensed trucks were out of work, others should be licensed. ’lt was said that the Transport Authority had not sat at Westport for nearly nine months to consider the local position. The secretary (Mr H. P. Rasmussen) was instructed to forward £3O to the New Zealand Alliance to coyer subscription fees. He was also instructed to ascertain from head office the method of contribution and the amounts levied on operators, whether they owned one truck or more. The local fee was fixed at £1 up to three trucks, and £2 for more than three trucks.

A protest was received from Mr W. Gourley (.Karameaj on the non-pay-ment by the Public Works Department cl overtime lor work done at Kararnea on Saturdays and Sundays. He asked lor a ruling on the matter. It was said that the present agreement provided lor a 44-hour week, and it was decided to send a resolutic.i to the New Zealand Association asking lor time and a half lor all work done over the stipulated 44 hours by a lorry owner.

RUGBY LEAGUE

VISIT OF DOMINION PRESIDENT

MEETING OF CLUB MEMBERS AT WESTPORT

Representatives of all clubs in the Buller district, Westport. Karamea, Denniston, and Millerton attended a general meeting at Westport on Sunday evening to meet Mt J. A. Redwood (president of the New Zealand Rugby League), who visited the district during the week-end with Mr T. McKenzie (Inangahua). Mr H. McKeowan, who presided, said it was an unusual pleasure to welcome the head of the league to Westport. Mr Redwood reviewed the advantages of the League game at length, claiming it to be one of the most spectacular and strenuous of all sports. He emphasised the need for physical fitness to play the game properly, and said that this made all the difference in the last North-South Island match at Auckland, when the poorly-trained South team was well beaten by the fit North Island team.

Mr Redwood said the League had nothing to offer but the game itself, and any money received from matches went back into the game, to prelude numerous benefits for the players, such as attire and trips and insurance. He gave an instance of how players on the tour of Britain and France would be treated, with an out of pocket allowance of £3 10s weekly for single men and £4 10s for married men. He expressed the hope that the West Coast would provide at-least two players for the team to make-the tour. Speaking on the spread of Rugby League in the Dominion, Mr Redwood expressed pleasure at the good work done in the Buller district in putting the game on a solid foundation. He especially commended Messrs McKenzie and G. Orman.

In reply fo a question by Mr W. Ryan, whether a grant could be made by the league council for the lease of a ground at Westport, Mr Redwood said that an application from the Duller sub-centre would be favourably considei’ed. Mr McKenzie said that besides senior teams at Karamea, Denniston, Millerton, and Westport, it was hoped to organise junior teams at these places. An appeal was made to all followers of the game by Messrs McKenzie and W. Hanstock and the chairman t<s organise their clubs on a sound basis this season, and further advice in this respect was given by Mr Redwood. During his address, the visitor mentioned the lair treatment which the newspapers had given the League game in the various centres.
