DENTAL CLINIC AT AKAROA

ESTABLISHMENT FOR PENINSULA

COMMITTEE SET UP TO INVESTIGATE

The Akaroa District High School Committee decided at its,monthly meeting to set up a small committee to take steps to establish a dental clinic at Akaroa to serve the whole of Banks Peninsula. An offer was received from Mr P. Peoples to act as secretary of the committee. The chairman (Dr. Edginton) and the headmaster (Mr Jackson) were appointed to take steps to form the dental clinic committee and to proceed with the establishment of the clinic as soon as possible. The headmaster reported that he had applied to the Canterbury Education Board for new equipment for the dressmaking classes at the manual school. There were 21 pupils, and the equipment was very inadequate. The chairman said he had seen the instructress, who said she had made repeated requisitions for the necessary equipment without success, and she was working under very difficult conditions.

The committee decided to write to ■the Education Board stating it was Impossible to carry on dressmaking instruction unless the equipment was ssupplied. An application by the Association for Country Education, Otago University, for permission to hold dressmaking classes at the manual training school was approved, provided the Education Board would agree.

The chairman congratulated the staff upon the efficient manner in which the swimming sports and life-saving instruction had been carried out for both primary 'and secondary pupils. The swimming sports had been very successful. It was decided to thank Mr and Mrs S. Hollander, who had given two medals, for competition, and to ask Mr Hollander to state how they should be allocated.

The headmaster reported that school life-saving teams would go to Christchurch shortly to qualify for certificates.

The provision of a wireless set at the secondary school was held over for further inquiry. The headmaster reported the primary department roll was 95, with an average attendance of 89, and the secondary department roll 50, with an average attendance of 46. The attendance had Improved considerably during the last month.

AKAROA SILVER

BAND

RESUMPTION OF PRACTICES

At a meeting of the Akaroa Silver Band, presided over by Mr F. R. E. Davis, Mayor of Akaroa, it was decided to resume band practices. Mr C. Minifie, of Duvauchelle, consented to act as bandmaster, and it was decided that practices woqld be held on Wednesday evenings. Mr Minifie said he considered there were enough players in the district to carry on the band successfully, and it was decided to call all available players together and resume practices next week. The question of band practices for younger players was also discussed, and Mr Minifie undertook to see how many high school and other boys were available. ■ The raising of funds to meet current expenses was discussed, and it was considered that no difficulty would be experienced In raising the necessary funds. It was decided also to inquire about whether further instruments were available beyond the 15 instruments owned by the band.

FITNESS WEEK

REPORT TO COMMITTEE AT KAIAPOI

The Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery) presided at a well-attended meeting of the National Physical Fitness Week Organising Committee held in the Borough Council Chambers, Kaiapoi, on Wednesday evening. Including a gift of £2 2s from the Kaiapoi Golf Club, it was reported that the receipts from the fitness week programme were about £4O. was decidedAhat alter paying outstanding expenses that the balance be deposited with the Post Office Savings Bank in the name of two trustees. The Mayor and Mr A. Hirst were appointed trustees. It was resolved that the committee be known as the Kaiapoi Physical Fitness Committee, and the Mayor, Messrs J. P. Farrell. R. W. Wylie, W. McPartlin, and A. Hirst were appointed the district committee.

In continuing the fitness campaign it was decided that a dance be held, and a special committee comprising Messrs W. McPartlin, J. McGarry, and F. Priest was set up to make arrangements.

LABOUR PARTY

ANNUAL MEETING OF BRANCH AT KAIAPOI

The president (Mr F. Neale) presided at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. The annual report showed that the branch membership had increased from 30 for 1936-37 to 124 for 1938-39. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £7 10s Id. The following officers were elected: President, Mr F. Neale; vice-presi-dent, Mr A. Linklater; secretary and treasurer. Mr B. Leaver; Labour Representation Committee delegates, Mr C. T. Williams and Mr A. E. Williams; executive committee, Messrs A. E. Harper, G. Wright, R. F. Joyce, C. Saxon, F. Isles, R. Day, A. E. Williams. C. T. Williams, and D, Neale.

LOYAL KAIAPOI LODGE

Bro. H. Hirst, N.G., presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge on Tuesday evening. A full report was given by P.D.G.M. Bro. A. E. Brown. P.G. Bro. S. T. Raymond, and P.G. Bro. T. M. Ayers on the proceedings and the business at the recent North Canterbury district conference in Christchurch.

Visiting members from the Loyal Paoanui Lodge were welcomed. The lodge was congratulated on the election of one of its members, P.D.G.M. Bro. A. E. Brown, as one of .the delegates to the movable conference to be held in Auckland on March 20.

Provided sufficient members signified their willingness to attend it was decided to hold a church parade at the Kaianci Methodist Church at an early date.
