Notice of the effect of the Social Security Act upon tbe membership of friendly societies is taken by the Grand Master (Mr John McKay) in the report which he is to present to the annual conference of the Auckland District . Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. During the ' first nine months of the- year, states the report, the strength of the order m the Auckland Province was advanced beyond 10,000, ' but since September there had been a’ slump in initiations. “The passing ,of the Social Security Act in October of last year,” states the report, “has affected the entry of new members, wjio are anticipating the benefits promised under the act. Ministers of the Crown* have informed the secretary of the National Friendly Societies’ Council that the, section dealing -with that portion of the act which affects us as-members of friendly societies has been postponed until some future date. Deputies of the order, and the grand master, and members of the directorate, are watching the position closely, and' members will .be informed as soon as regulations affecting us are gazetted.” ‘ ■
