BOWLS
OLD SOLDIERS’ TOURNAMENT ■ ANNUAL EVENT IX MILITARY STYLE HORNBY CLUB THE WINNER I ' A bowling • tournament was conducted in a military atmosphere at the Sydenham Club’s green on Saturday afternoon, by the' Returned Soldiers’ Association. A sand-bagged and camouflaged entrance and two mock howitzers greeted visitors. Returned men oflly were eligible and 46 rinks entered, play being held on Cashr mere and Beckenham greens also, from where successful players went to Sydenham for the semi-finals and finals. Each player was given an army ration of rum before play, at 9 a.m., and the military atmosphere was intensified by the greeting. "Halt! Who goes there?’ The name of the player’s club brought forth "Pass friend.” Mr A. E. Haynes, president of the Returned Soldiers Association, and Mr A. Dickson spoke, and Mr C. Spearman replied for the Sydenham Club. . . Additional touches of realism were added by firing off the howitzers with crackers after the speeches, and the rinks were given names such as Hill 60, Ypres, The cup was presented to the winner, Hornby, by its donor, Mr B.
