VEGETABLE FAMINE IN AUSTRALIA
RECORD POTATO PRICES
IN SYDNEY
STRONG PRESSURE FOR REMOVAL OF EMBARGO
CANBERRA, February 14,
The famine prices for potatoes in Australia are responsible for renewed demands on the Commonwealth Government to remove the embargo on New Zealand potatoes. So strong is the pressure that an announcement on the subject is expected within a few days. The “Daily Telegraph” states that the Tasmanian growers are pressing the Federal Government to retain the embargo on New Zealand potatoes. It was stated in Federal political circles yesterday that the move follows the agitation for the removal of the ban because the record potato prices in Sydney have made them unprocurable by the average family. The Sydney “Sun” states that the prices of some vegetables crashed in the Sydney market yesterday, resulting in the best beans and peas retailing at 6d per lb. Carrots and swedes also slumped to half of last week’s price. Potatoes dropped from £25 to £2l a ton.
