TUESDAY .(Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) INTOXICATED MOTORIST

A plea of guilty was entered by Harold Dickonsen Roach, a labourer (Mr D. W. Russell), to a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a -motor-car in Ferry road on February 11. ~ , Senior-Sergeant P. C. Felton said that a traffic inspector saw. a car driven by Roach veering along Ferry road, and when he stopped Roach he found that he was in a state of intoxication. Roach, who had admitted that he had had six shandies, was certified by a doctor as being intoxicated. Mr Russell said that his client had shown more candour than most persons who appeared for this type of offence. The fact that he could remember the number of drinks he had taken indicated some degree of sobriety. Roach was not addicted to liquor. , The Magistrate imposed a fine of £ls, in default 30 days’ imprisonment, and endorsed and cancelled Roach’s licence for two years. REHEARING GRANTED

Through Mr Roy Twyneham, Leo Callan, who was fined £lO and had his licence endorsed and suspended for nine months for driving at a speed that might have been dangerous to the public, at a sitting of the Court on February 7, filed an affidavit for the rehearing of the case. Mr Twyneham said that Callan had not been represented by counsel at the previous sitting. If he did not get his licence back, he would be prohibited from obtaining employment. . The Magistrate increased the fine to £l2 and endorsed Callan’s licence, which was regranted to him. FINES TOTAL £25 Charges of driving at a speed exceeding 30 miles an hour in a restricted area, and of having no driver’s licence, were preferred against Robert Court. Inspector A. I. Garriock, of the Transport Department, said that he found Court travelling at 49 miles an hour at Northcote. Court had told him that he was in a hurry to get home, and assured him that he had his driver’s licence at home. However, inquiries had shown that Court had had his licence cancelled for 12 months and had been fined £3O on August 18 for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car.

The Magistrate imposed a fine of £2O on the charge of not having a licence, and £5 on that of exceeding the speed limit. TRAFFIC BREACHES

The following penalties were imposed for breaches of the traffic regulations, costs being ordered in each case unless otherwise stated;— No hands on handlebars: Alan McPherson Eyles, 10s; Russell Bucknell, ss.

Overtaking on intersection: Raymond Allen, 20s.

Cutting corner: William F. Reaby, 20s.

Overloading motor-lorry; Victor G. Main, 20s (exceeding width and length, 30s).

Exceeding length of lorry load: Douglas Robert Topham Hall, 20s. No cycle light: James Sheffield Burford, 10s; Jack McLachlan, costs only. No cycle brake; Leslie Williams, 10s (no bell, no white mudguard, no reflector, costs only on each charge); Foster Alleyne, ss; William Blake, ss; Patrick Noonan, ss.

No cycle bell; Geoff. G. Davidson, costs only; lan Fenwick, ss; Sydney Lindsay. ss. No reflector: Terence O’Keefe, ss.

Parking over time limit: John William Anderson, 20s; Edwin J. Hatherley, 20s; Charles W. Hervey, 10s; Walter Perfect, 10s.
