NOVEL METHOD OF CELEBRATION

PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK IN LOBURN

INSPECTION INyiTED OF GROWING OF FOODS

An original method for 1 the celebration of physical fitness week —an invitation to city persons to inspect the growing of foods on fruit farms, sheep and industrial farms in the district, combined with lectures on health and oh the production of foods —has been approved for the Loburn district by a representative meeting, over which the chairman of the Ashley County Council (Mr H. G. Philpott) presided. The holding of the physical fitness week in Loburn was approved, and the plans, apart from the throwing open of producing areas, allow for the holding of a tennis tournament, sports meeting, and swimming carnivals for children and adults. There will be a further meeting of all interested residents of the district to-night in the Loburn Ha\\. , 1 The following committee was elected to draft a programme and make final arrangements;— Chairman, Mr H. Lr. Philpott; secretary, Mr C. A. Belcher; tennis. Mr F. Webb; fruitgrowers representative, Mr H. Sampson: cricket representative. Mr H. T MethereU; football representative. Mr R. It was agreed to arrange a tennis tournament for four players l r °n* clubs, committee, and residents, to be held each evening during the week from 6 to 8 p.m. A childrens swimming carnival for the learn-to-swim week was arranged for Monday .afternoon. February 20, at 2.30 p.m., in the swimming pool in the Makenkeri river, when the children from the Loburn, North Loburn, and Okuku Schools and the district would be ]reauested to be present* An adult swimming carnival was tentatively arranged for Wednesday evening, February 22, at 6 o’clock, to be held in the pool in the Ashley river. Post entries will be taken for the events. Saturday afternoon, February 25, was set aside as a general field day, when sports, novelties, and competitions of all descriptions will be held in the Loburn Domain, commencing at 1.30 p.m. Afternoon tea for adults and sweets for the children will be provided, the week's activities ending with a dance in the Loburn Hall on Saturday evening- , . .. A suggestion that a general invitation be extended to city people to visit the district and inspect the actual growing of foods was approved. The suggestion, it was held, could ■ be incorporated with the lectures and addresses on health, on how food was produced, “food for health,” and with demonstrations. It was agreed that Sunday, February 19. be an open day in the county for visitors to inspect the orchards where the many varieties of fruits were fast coming into season, and the adjacent farms, where oats, wheat, barley, linseed, and potatoes were flourishing and being harvested. Though shearing was completed, there were still fleeces that could be inspected at sheds, and,. it was pointed out also, the fat lamb industry was at its peak. No definite time nor routine was fixed, the council requesting farmers and fruitgrowers to co-operate, show round, and describe matters of interest to any visitor who happened to call.

STATE HOUSING PROGRESS

BUILDINGS FINISHED IN IVORY STREET

All five State houses in Ivory street were completed by the end bf last week, and with the completion of three in Victoria street shortly the present State housing construction in Rangiora will be finished. The number of State houses after the Victoria street buildings are finished will be 19. There has not yet been an indication whether more State houses, as sought by the Rangiora Borough Council, will be started in the meanwhile. Similarly there has been no report whether the newlyfinished dwellings have been let.

HOSPITAL LOAN

LEESTON TOWN BOARD’S DISCUSSION

Although the receipt of information from the North Canterbury Hospital Board about its proposed loan of £67,000 for additions to the nurses home led to some discussion on the steady growth in the hospital levies on local bodies, the Leeston Town Board at its monthly meeting decided that it would not lodge an objection. The Town Clerk, Christchurch, asked for confirmation of the board’s intentions about its contribution towards the Canterbury court at the Centennial Exhibition and the provincial memorial. It was decided to adhere to the decision to contribute £55 7S provided that other local bodies paid their allocations. , • ■ A proposal that the paving in the business part of the town should be tarred and top-dressed was made, and the chairman was asked to Inquire into the cost and report to next meeting.

LEARN-TOSWIM CAMPAIGN

CLASSES STARTED AT AMBERLEY

'The learn-to-swim campaign has heen inaugurated in Axnberley and three honorary instructors, the Rev. F. N. Taylor, Messrs J. M. South and W. E. Cook, have been appointed. Children from the Omihl and. Broomfield Schools are also attending the classes-

More than 50 per cent, of the Amberley children were taught to swim last year, when a local campaign was held, and it is hoped to improve on this percentage this year. An evening carnival was held by the Amberley Swimming Club and the results were:—
