Favourable Conditions

In the past the Dunedin Jockey Club has occasionally been rather unlucky in the weather for its meetings, which has hampered their success. Bad luck in that direction has been the means of checking progress whicji would have been much greater if the weather, had been better. There is a legend that it has never rained on Dunedin Cup Day, but when heavy rain was falling during all the preceding night it appeared certain that bad luck was again in store. However, when the day came the racing was enjoyed under very favourable conditions. The night preceding the second day was also marked witfi a fall of'rain, but the day broke fine, dnd it may be a sign of better luck in the future.

A Common Complaint Stipendiary stewards, acting in an advisory capacity, have been employed for the first time at jumping meetings in England this season. Writing at the end of December, a contributor to a London paper said it was too early then to say whether they were beneficial to the sport. It was apparent, however. that he thought more questions should have been asked where horses reversed their form, and added. "The trouble often is that when questions are asked it is the small man who gets into trouble, while the bijE! man can get away with most things.’

A Low Minimum The Australian Rules of Racing name 6-7 as the minimum weight in flat races but it is becoming apparent each year that the time is not far distant when the minimum will liave to be raised to 7-0. This was done in New Zealand many years ago; in fact, .except in a limited number of races the minimum here has gone up to 7-7. Owners in Aurtralia are finding it almost impossible to secure a boy capable of riding at 6-7. There are few natural light-weights and dozens of boys who have shown promise of developing into first-class riders have been forced by increasing weight to seek other employment. . The handicappers appreciate the difficulties -wßich confront owners in getting light boys to ride their horses, and frequently do not take their handicaps do -n to the minimum.

King's Cup Entries for the King’s Cup, of £ISOO, and a gold cup, valued £IOO, the gift of His Majesty the King, to be run over a mile and a half, on the first day of the Victoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. March 4, closed yesterday. Weights will be declared on Monday. The highest handicap weight will be 9-5, and the lowest 7-0. A condition of the race states that-a horse cannot be penalised after the declaration of the weights. . . Well-Bred Importations Six young brood mares were landed recently at Wellington from England. They are at present at the Grange Stud. Westmere, and they are intended for sale by auction at Trehtham next month. All are in foal to New Zealand time to the French-bred stallion, Lang Bian, a son of Massine. Florilege, a four-year-old, is a daughter- of Felstead from a Captain Cuttle-*—Tracery mare, who is halfsister .to Artist’s Proof, a good performer. Another four-year-old is Reviriella, by Reveillon from Dulcibella, by Gay Crusader. Reveillon is halfbrother to Campanula, winner of the One Thousand, and Revinella’s third dam is the Oaks winner, Glass Doll. Flying Star II is a four-year-old daughter of Salmon Leap, winner of the Goodwood Cup from Etoile d’Orinet, by: Sardanpale. ; Through this mare is introduced to the Dominion the famous Dollar blood, a most valued strain

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on Saturday will close to-day at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting will close at 9 pjn. on Monday. Omitte.d from Handicaps Waipahi. 24 yards, was omitted from the list of handicaps for the Eclipse Handicap at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting. New Brighton T.C. ■ All interest on. Saturday will be centred in the New Brighton club’s meeting, which has become one of the most popular in the trotting calendar. Gradually increased stakes, better accommodation for the public and those actively engaged in the sport, and a thoroughly business-like way of running a meeting have earned the appreciation of all who go racing. Special arrangements have been made for the transport of a big crowd and motorists will be well catered for in a huge parking area, to which no admission charge is made. Especial interest will centre in the Free for All. in which eight of the best pacers in commission «are engaged. The number includes Indianapolis, who. with a mile record of 2min 0 2-ssec against his name, showed early last month that he had not lost all his dash when he paced an exhibition half mile in 58 2-ssec. He may prove one of the hardest to dispose of. Also from J. Fraser’s stable will come a worthy representative in Ironside. The Free for All promises to be a race full of interest. A Good Cause At Adelaide recently a trotting meeting held in aid of the Bushflres Fund gathered more than £.1500. Kaikoura T.C. For its meeting to be held on February 25 the Kaikoura Trotting Club has received 83 entries, representing 41 horses. With the exception of Durability. Isabella Scott, and Stylish Boy, all claim two or more engagements. Last season the club surrendered its permit to the. New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, gnd ir this way very materially assisted towards the success of the InterDominon championships held at Addington. The Kaikoura Club, because of the difficulty of transport, has had a hard struggle to retain its permit, but with the completion of the main trunk line it is hoped that more solid support will be given by owners and trainers.

Prospects • Black Marble put up a good race to finish fourth in the Harewood Handicap at Addington on Saturday after registering about 3min 21sec for a mile and a half. He has been nominated for the Kaikoura meeting, and' off a three-minute mark for a mile and a quarter he should not have much trouble in beating his four moderate opponents. Worthy Need, who registered 3min 19 l-ssec when he finished second to Attain, is another with prospects of success at the Kaikoura fixture.

A Correspondent’s View A Hornby correspondent, F. W. Davison, writes as’ follows:—“So much has been written lately about the inconsistency of pacers and trotters and the stipendiary stewards by trotting reporters that at last it looked as if the public was going to get a fair go. However, when the judge hoisted Franz Derby’s number over Blue I noticed no comment was made. As one of the many outside ‘cash customers,’ who thought this was a mistake. I would like your views to be expressed in your very interesting column. I trust this will not embarrass you.”

In Reply The correspondent may rest assured that the letter is not embarrassing. It is rather refreshing -to find. a. reader with enough confidence to judge a race from a position in the outside enclosure. The race referred to is the Strowan Handicap at Canterbury Park on Saturday last, in which the judge placed Franz Derby, the winner, a head in front of Blue Logan. The reporters’ stand at Addington is not in the ideal position for a correct decision to be given in the case of a head and head finish, but it is much better placed than is the outside enclosure. From the press stand Blue Logan appeared to win by a very narrow margin, but as he was racing on the rails he would naturally appear to be more forward than Franz Derby, A photograph, which is published in this issue, will give the same idea as would be gained by occupants of the press stand, but this was taken from a position at least 20 yards past the winning post. Patrons of the inner enclosure thought that Franz Derby

had won by much more than a head. The only man in a position to give a correct decision was the judge, and from the photograph and the angle from which it was taken, his decision seems to have been correct. Judges, like other officials, make mistakes, but in the case of Franz Derby and Blue Logan there appears no reason for dispute. Death of Veteran

Gold Jacket, winner of the Auckland Trotting Cup in 1928 and 1929, as well as many other good handicaps, died recently at the age of 19. He was sold by Mr E. J. Parkes to an Australian sportsman in 1934, and won races in Victoria, West Australia, and South Australia. Gold Jacket was by Gold Bell from Lady S., by Specialist In Auckland he was trained in turn by G. Paton, H. Kinnimont, and L. McMahon, and was driven by A. Bryce in his Cup victories.

Kaikoura Nominations Willa has been nominated for the Railway Handicap at the Kaikoura Trotting Club’s meeting on February 25. King’s Drive is also among the nominations for the Railway Handicap. and not King’s Guy, as stated yesterday.
