TENTH ANNIVERSARY

ANNUAL MEETING

ROTHERHAM

METHODIST MISSIONARY UNION

The tenth, anniversary of the Christchurch central branch of the ■ North Canterbury auxiliary of the Methodist Women’s Missionary Union of New Zealand was celebrated at a meeting held in the Durham street Methodist scholroom. There was a large attendance of members from the Durham street, Sydenham, Riccarton, and Cambridge terrace circuits, and several visitors, including Sisters May Barnett and Rona Taylor The president, Mrs W. Moor, presided, and Mrs G. Bowron, a former Dominion president of the union, offered the dedicatory prayer. . , Occupying the principal place in front of the platform was a birthday cake given by the treasurer, Mrs J. P. Whetter and bedecked with the appropriate number of candles. “Blessing bags,” which had been previously distributed, were collected, and the contents added a substantial sum to the society’s funds. Recitations were given by Miss Withell, and songs sung by Mrs G. Clark and Miss Rita Simpson. Votes of thanks were accorded to the performers, and to Mrs Will Hutchens, who arranged the musical programme and acted as accompanist. Afternoon aea was provided by the members of the executive.

SELWYN KINDERGARTEN

The annual meeting of the Selwyn Kindergarten was held recently. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The balance-sheet showed the cash received at £344 7s 6d, cash banked £ll4 10s, expenses for the year £214 8s lOd, balance in hand £ls 8s Bd.

Mesdames Wootton and Hessy reported that the receipts from card parties amounted to £SO 11s 7d. A motion of appreciation to all who had helped to make these meetings successful was carried. The new committee was then formed, Mrs Hessy taking the chair. The elec? tion of officers was as follows:—Convener, Mrs S. J. L. Hewitt; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Williamson and Paterson; treasurer, Mrs Atkinson; secretary, Mrs Heyward; committee, Mesdames Barnett, Wootton, Shier, Hamlin, Hessy, Harding, Watson, and Swallow. Mrs Hessy did not seek re-election as secretary, and she was thanked for her services during the last year.

At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs Hewitt made a presentation of a bouquet and two cups and saucers to Mrs Atkinson, who had been treasurer for many years.

SHERRY PARTY IN LONDON

SIR HARRY AND LADY BATTERBEE HONOURED

Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee were guests at a sherry party of the New Zealand group of the Overseas League on January 25. They left for Wellington on February 2 by the Rangitata, with their domestic staff..

Among those present were Mr W. J. Jordan, Colonel E. ff. Lascelles, Viscount Hampden, Mrs. E. S. Harston, and Mrs L. Levien. ,

Because of the unpleasant weather, the attendance was smaller than it would otherwise have been.

Mr Jordan said he hoped that Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee would meet with the same friendship in New Zealand as has been accorded to himself and Mrs Jordan in England—he could not say more. Sir Harry said he was not going to a strange country, for he had very happy recollections of his visit when he accompanied the King and Queen —then Duke and Duchess of York—to New Zealand, and he felt quite sure that he and his wife would feel thoroughly at home. He was glad to say that Lady Batterbee had made a splendid recovery from her illness.

WOMEN’S . INSTITUTE-

The February meeting- of the Rotherham Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Robinson. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Craighead in her recent bereavement. A letter was read from the Dominion secretary askng the institutes to prepare work for the Centennial Exhibition.

In the social half-hour a competition was won by Miss Poulter. Winners of other competitions were as follows: —Bloom (large), Mesdames Popplewell and Johnstone (equal) 1; small, Miss Robb 1, Misses Dreaver and Popplewell (equal) 2; jam, Mrs Thomson 1, Miss Poulter 2; best article from felt hats. Miss J. Mclntosh 1, Miss J. Popplewell 2. Hostesses were Mrs and Miss Popplewell and Miss Robb.

Budge, Renee Gallagher, Lorna Gallagher, Mavis Smith, Bessie Hands, Grace Walker, Nahcy James, and Nancy Gallagher.
