SHORTAGE OF TYPISTS
PUBLIC WORKS HELD UP
BUILDING AT LINCOLN COLLEGE
A shortage of typists is causing some public works undertakings to be held up. This information was contained in a letter received by the board of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, yesterday morning from the Public Works Department in answer to an inquiry about the delay in starting urgently required buildings at the college. The letter also stated that there was a shortage of draughtsmen, but this shortage had to some extent been overcome. „ _ , The director, Professor E. R. Hudson, explained that the buildings were urgently needed, particularly in view of the large increase in the number of students ‘at the college this year. Temporary accommodation had been arranged for a number of students in the quarters of some of the non-permanent farm staff; but this accommodation was in a concrete building which could not be heated, and was therefore unsuitable in winter or in very cold weather.
Mr C. T. Aschman said that it appeared that the work was being held up because the department had no architects free to do the work necessary. He suggested that the college should apply, as Canterbury College had done, for permission to engage a private architect for the work. On his motion, Messrs T. H. McCombs, M.P., and C. Morgan Williams, M.P., were appointed to approach the Minister for Public Works to obtain permission to engage an outside architect.
