NEW MUNICIPAL BUILDING

MANCHESTER STREET STRUCTURE

OPENING OF M.E.D. OFFICE DELAYED

Unexpected delays have occurred in the completion of the Municipal Electricity Department’s new building at the corner of Manchester and Armagh streets. The opening has been further deferred and is not likely to take place for another month. All the external scaffolding of the four-storeyed building has been removed; but the big cranes remain on top of the new building and on the roof of the old showroom adjoining the tepid baths. Except for the completion of the exterior stairway running from the verandah to tlfe ironwork abutting from the fourth floor, the building appears to be finished to the passer-by. ' However, some plastering has still to be done inside, and the furnishing, tenders for which have been called but have not yet been accepted by the council, has yet to be done. Until the contractor can give an approximate date for the handing over of the building' no function can be arranged by the City Council. The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) said yesterday afternoon that at least one month would be needed for the building to be made available for use. . .
