FITNESS WEEK

“GOVERNMENT SHOULD FINANCE CAMPAIGN” MEETING OF PUBLICITY COMMITTEE “Physical fitness week, is sponsored by the Government, and . should be financed by the Government,” said Mr A. C. Maxwell, chairman of the local publicity committee of the National Physical Welfare campaign, when discussing who should pay for the printing of placards which will be placed in city shop windows during physical fitness week, at a meeting of the committee yesterday. The chairman reported that he and Mrs G. G. Lockwood had visited four large drapery firms, and the managers were quite prepared to stage special window displays. He had also visited the leading sports depots, but these, however, would not have to do much as their displays were in the right direction. The managers of some other shops he had visited had stated that they would need a placard for their windows, and that brought up the question of funds. He wondered how far the City Council’s grant of £lO would go in this direction. Mr A. L. Power said that the sum would be ample for the cost of the placards. Mr J. McKenzie: Why can’t the Government printer get them out? The chairman said that he had heard the Hon. W. E. Parry give a fine address about the campaign, but this had been rather spoilt by his concluding

I remarks that the local bodies would have to finance it. Mrs G. G. Lockwood; That is a hopeless business. Mr McKenzie said that it was now probably too late for the Government printer to print any placards for the campaign. The newspapers and the wireless stations were doing as much as possible for the campaign, he said, and the theatre managers had also offered their co-operation. It was agreed to obtain the placards. Reports were given by Mr E. J. Thompson and Mr McKenzie on the arrangements that had been made to give publicity to the campaign through the wireless stations. Mr Power reported that a sign would be erected on the tramway shelter in Cathedral square. ARRANGEMENTS MADE AT SUMNER Mr I. J. Wilson presided over a meeting of the Sumner committee for the observance of physical fitness week. It was decided that the organiser should see what arrangements could be made for an open-air service on the afternoon of February 26. Mr E. T. Chitty offered to inquire about securing, the services of a men’s choir. It was decided to secure a list of the successes of the various clubs in the borough during the past. A subcommittee consisting of Messrs E. T. Chitty, C. L. Allen, W. Miles, and the organiser was elected to collect the data. The planting of a suitable tree was referred to the Sumner Beautifying Association. Mr E. Rippon reported for the Sumner Ambulance Division and Mr J.

Merritt for the Sumner Fire Brigadi that both organisations would co-oper ate in the organisation oi a dance.

It was decided that the organiser should arrange to meet the businessmen on Monday evening. Arrangements were reported to be in hand for inter-borough contests in tennis, bowls, and cricket during the celebrations. It was agreed that the procession should include sports groups (noncompetitive) and health and sports theme fancy dress groups for junior and senior boys and girls, decorated bicycles, decorated motor-cars and lorries (health themes), and caravan or trailer camping outfits. It was reported that the Sumner District High School would give demonstrations of health fitness work at the school and on the beach each day from 10.40 a.m. to midday.
