OCTOGENARIAN BOWLER

JUSTICE OF PEACE FOR 45 YEARS

MR AND MRS M. H. HAMILTON ARE CONGRATULATED Opportunity was taken by bowlers at the Rangiora green in the weekend to congratulate Mr and Mrs M. H. Hamilton, who have celebrated their eightieth birthdays, Mr Hamilton on Saturday, and Mrs Hamilton yesterday. The couple, well-known residents of Seddoh street, Rangiora, were also congratulated at the Methodist Church service on Sunday. Both Mr and Mrs Hamilton enjoy excellent health, Mr Hamilton being a keen bowler and spending as many as six afternoons a week on the green. They are members of the Methodist Church, Mr Hamilton having served as a local preacher. He has also been a Justice of the Peace for 45 years. Mr Hamilton was born at Larne, County Antrim, on February 11, 1859, and Mrs Hamilton at Belfast on February 13 of the same year. They were married at Ballynure in 1879 and arrived in New Zealand on the Rangitiki in 1883. Mr Hamilton served at the Auckland gas works for 17 years, and from that time until his retirement from the Rangiora gasworks four and a half years ago managed gasworks in several towns, except for a break of 11 years, when he was in, charge of, the Steel Pipe Company at Wanganui. PERSONAL NOTES RANGIORA Mr W. C. Prosser is spending his annual vacation in the North Island. He will represent the Rangiora Borough Council at the library conference at Palmerston North. He will return about the end of February. Mr A. K. Hawkey has left Rangiora to take up a position with a branch firm in Timaru. His position with the firm in Rangiora will be filled by Mr F. Harford, of Dunedin. CHEVIOT Mr and Mrs L. Carmine (Feilding), who have been the guests of Mr and Mrs A. W. Leaman, Spotswood, have left for the West Coast, where they will continue their holiday before returning home. „ TT _ , Comrpander and Mrs D. G. H. Bush, “lona,” Parnassus, have left for a trip to England. OBITUARY MR THOMAS H. WILSON Mr Thomas H. Wilson, who died last week at the Masterton Hospital, was well-known in North Canterbury and Mid-Canterbury, where he resided tor a number of years, and especially in Ashley Bank, near Rangiora, where he received his early education. Mr Wilson was born at Portadown, County Down, Ireland, in 1856, and at the age of two left with his parents, Mr and Mrs William Wilson, for New Zealand, arriving at Lyttelton in May, 1859.i „ _ In 1861, the family moved to Ashley •Bank, where they took up farming, later starting a general store in the Ashley township. Mr Wilson was educated in the old Ashley School, then on the bank of the river, and later assisted in shifting the old school to its present site. After working on his father’s farm for some years, he took over, with Mr Charles Worrell, a farm at Loburn. Later, again, he moved to Riverside, Ashburton, and afterwards to Carrington, in the North Island, where he lived until his death. He married Miss Doris Busch, of Ashley Bank, who died some years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Margaret, four sons, George, Charles, William, and Reginald, and two brothers residing in Rangiora, Dickson and Carson. His eldest son was killed at Gallipoli in the Great War. WAIREWA COUNTY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Wairewa County Council was held at Little River when there were present Crs. F. Coop (chairman), W. H. Montgomery, W, F. Parkinson, J. O. Coop, and E. J. Keenan. The clerk reported that several other roads had been let for the right to cut cocksfoot on roads, and in all the revenue from this source amounted to about £lO. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mrs Frank Miller, of Motukarara. . .. On the recommendation of the finance committee, it was decided that an application should be made for a new police station at Little River. Cr. Montgomery reported that blackberry in Western Valley had been treated with sodium chlorate. There was gorse at /the top of Peraki and right through the bush down to the bay. The gorse in the forest reserve should also be grubbed. Cr. Parkinson drew attention to the approaches of bridges on the main road at Gebbie’s Valley, and it was decided that the engineer attend to them. . ■ Mr D. Barwick asked if the council was going to take advantage of the Government grant to metal the lower end of Boosu road. The length of road to be metalled was 150.chains. It was decided to apply to the Public Works Department to have shingle put on the road. HOSPITAL VISITING COMMITTEE GARDEN PARTY HELD AT AKAROA - An enjoyable garden party arranged by Mrs B. W. Henning, president, and the members of the Akaroa, Hospital Ladies’ Visiting Committee was held in the hospital grounds. The weather was ideal. Sister White, matron of the hospital, and her staff also helped with the entertaining of the large number present. Winners of games and competitions were Mesdames D. J. Narbey, F. Williamson, J. Finch (Dunedin) J. E. Armstrong, and F. R. E. Davis. WEEK-END ATTENDANCE - AT WAIKUKU BEACH A large number of persons again visited Waikuku Beach in the weekend, especially on Sunday, when a count showed that about 500 cars' had .arrived at various times - through the day. Concert items were .given at the beach domain by Derry’s Military I Band. •

CROQUET KAIPAOI BEATS AKAROA A croquet match was played between the Akaroa and Kaiapoi clubs at Akaroa on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Kaiapoi. by 5 games to 4. The following are the results, Kaiapoi players mentioned first:— Doubles —Mesdames Rinaldi and Childs beat Miss M. Jacobson and Mrs A. E. Kingston, 26-16; Mesdames Tourell and Hart beat Miss E. M. Jacobson and Mrs A. V. Le Lievre, 26-12; Mesdames Bates and McMullan beat Mrs W. B. Ramsay and Miss L. Vangioni, 26-9. Singles—Mrs Rinaldi beat Miss M. Jacobson. 26-16; Mrs Childs lost to Mrs A. E. Kingston, 17-26; Mrs Tourell lost to Miss E. M. Jacobson, 24-26; Mrs Hart lost to Mrs A. V. Le Lievre. 1526; Mrs Bates lost to Mrs W. B. Ramsay. 23-26; Mrs McMullan beat Miss L. Vangioni, 26-15. BAND CONCERT GIVEN AT PREBBLETON The New Brighton Municipal Band, under the conductor (Mr J. Nuttall). visited Prebbleton on Sunday afternoon and played a programme of music in the domain.
