RACING AND TROTTING

TIMARU T.C.

DONALD DHU WINS HANDICAP

SUCCESS OF R. J. HUMPHREYS In fine but cold and windy weather the Timaru Trotting Club held its summer meeting on the Washdyke racecourse on Saturday. The totalisator investments, which amounted to £19.194, showed an increase of £4597 on the £14,597 invested at the corresponding meeting last year. The attendance was bigger than usual, and with increased revenue from all sources the financial success of the meeting is assured. This should give the club encouragement to offer more attractive programmes than are provided at present. The stakes do not provide the necessary inducement for many owners and trainers and some of the leading stables were not represented.

The Kerry town Handicap and the Pareora Handicap provided exciting finishes, but generally the sport was below standard and provided few thrills for the big crowd. A hostile demonstration was made against O. E. Hooper, the driver of Cruiser, in the Kerrytown Handicap, and after an inquiry it was announced that the explanation of the driver had been accepted. Cruiser had run unplaced in the Salisbury Handicap earlier in the day and a section of the crowd considered his running inconsistent. The track was in very good order though not exceptionally fast. A good deal of interest was taken in an attempt made by Lucky Jack to beat the record of 2min 1 2-ssec recorded by Van Derby at Auckland, but neither track nor weather conditions were suitable for such fast times. Assisted by Gold Salute <R. Townley). Lucky Jack showed great brilliance at stages of his trial, but according to the official timekeepers, the best he could do was • 2min 6 l-ssec. Many private watches, however, recorded 2min 5 2-ssec for the journey. The first quarter mile was passed in 29 4-ssec, the half mile in Imin 2sec, and six furlongs in Imin 33 3-ssec. Under the conditions it was a creditable effort and it would be interesting to see the Jack Potts horse 'attempt the record under tfye best conditions at Addington. A feature of the day’s racing was the success attained by the Templeton trainer R. J. Humphreys, who won three races in succession with Janeworthy, Donald Dhu, and Acuity, all of whom were driven 'by J. Pringle. Details of the racing are as follows: CLABEMONJ HANDICAP, Of £115; second horse £2O, and third horse £lO from stake. Unhoppled trotters, 3min 44sec class. One mile and a half. 3—G. R. NOTES ON THE RACING Lost at the Start Co-Director, the favourite for the Claremont Handicap, made a bad beginning, and this cost him the race. Once on his feet, however, he trotted steadily and made up a lot of ground in the Ir three furlongs. The winner, Thor, broke several times, but carefully driven he was trotting steadily over the last bit. " Frances. Worthy was soon in the lead from Donald Guy and Thor, but all three broke before three furlongs had been covered, and Llewellyn’s Pet led at the half distance from Cracksman, Thor, Kilmorick, Co-Director, and Native Ruler. Llewellyn’s Pet, Cracksman, and Thor were still in front as the straight was reached, but the former pair broke badlfr and Thor went on to win comfortably, while CoDirector with a late finish got up to second place followed by Native Ruler and Cracksman.

Altogether it was a sorry exhibition and outside the winner the only two to show a semblance of form were CoDirector and Native Ruler. Lady Ede again stayed on the mark. Janeworthy Improves

Following on two poor displays at the Canterbury Park meeting it was surprising to find Jane worthy made favourite for the Salisbury Handicap, but she justified the support accorded her by a decisive victory. She registered 2min 12sec from a 2min 20sec mark—a very smart effort. Stylish Boy and Janeworthy were the quickest to begin and at the end of ' two furlongs they were leading from Devotion. Frisco Silk, Colonel Axworthy, Oversight, and Battlevale. Stylish Boy led down the back and round the top turn where Colonel Axworthy made a smart run on the outside. Janeworthy then went to the front and Stylish Boy retired, while Colonel Axworthy drew nearer the leader. Janeworthy, however, had something in reserve and won nicely from Colonel Axworthy, who had a good advantage of Battlevale, Overright, Devotipn, and Frisco Silk. ,The winner showed a big improvement and this marked her first win since joining R. J. Humphreys’s stable. She should win again. Colonel Axworthy was not well placed early, but he made a brave fight to gain second money. Stylish Boy looked a likely place-filler at the top of the straight. but he failed badly and Battlevale gained third place. The remainder were outclassed. Donald Dhu Wins

The John Hole Memorial Handicap was run at a very slow pace for the first mile and a half, but from then on the pace was on, and the last half mile was run in Imin 2sec. Donald Dhu conceded several lengths’ start to Icevus in the straight, but he came away to win like a really good pacer. It gave R. J. Humphreys (trainer) and J. Pringle (driver) their second win of the day, Fremont began smartly and under a very strong pull he led from Red Ranger, Icevus, Fine Art, Donald Dhu, Toorak, Horse Power and Llewellyn’s Pride, and this was the order for the first mile and a half, at which stage Horse Power made a fast run on the outside. Three furlongs from home Fine Art broke up badly and dropped out and as the straight was reached Icevus was leading by several lengths from Horse Power and Donald Dhu. The last-named did not make a real effort until the distance, when with a great burst of speed he fairly outclassed the field. While Donald Dhu was not called on for any great test of stamina he showed great brilliance over the last part. It marked his second win since joining R. J. Hum-; phreys’s stable. Icevus was always nicely placed in behind the leader, but the sprint he commenced three furlongs from home he could not carry on. Toorak added- to his long list of placed performances and he fairly outstayed Horse Power in the last quar-

ter mile. Fremont pulled hard and beat himself and Fine Art’s bad break was disappointing. Red Ranger tired and Llewellyn’s Pride never looked to have a chance. The' Hat-Trick

The Humphreys-Pringle combination completed the hat-trick when Acuity won the Levels Handicap after a splendid finishing run. She was always handily placed, but it was not until the distance post that she really got clear to challenge the leaders. Several horses broke up at the start and soon Orby Lad, McGregor, and Acuity had established a substantial lead from Dancing Pirate, Marfax, Waikari Jack, and Four Square. Dancing Pirate did good work in bridging a big gap and had joined the leaders half a mile from home. At the straight entrance he ranged alongside Acuity, and at the distance was in the lead. This move enabled Acuity to get clear and she soon put the result beyond doubt. Dancing Pirate was second with a good advantage of the third horse, McGregor, and Waikari Jack.

Acuity, who had previously won at the Hororata meeting, is a greatly improved mare, but in this race she had all the best of the running and over the later stages the issue was never in doubt. Dancing Pirate went a splendid race, while most impressive of the unplaced division were Waikari Jack and Four Square. Waikari Jack was forced to cover a lot oi extra ground. A Comfortable Victory

Great Linnet scored a very comfortable victory in the .Waimate Handicap and assisted by frequent mistakes by the other runners he was not troubled over the last half mile. Frances Worthy was the early leader from Kilmorick, Native Ruler, and Lady Ede, but at the end of a round Groat Linnet was the leader from Mother’s Boy, Native .Ruler, ana Lady Ede. Down the back stretch the last lime Great Linnet went away from the field and was never in danger of defeat. Native Ruler ana Patch’s Discovery had a good tussle for second place, and the former stayed on the better. Kilmorick was fourth, followed by Frances Worthy and Thor. The winner was a class above the rest and won very comfortably. Native Ruler, who had finished third in the opening event, again made a good showing. Lady Ede went oft correctly, but broke twice going out of the straight. She has speed, but is not reliable. Patch’s Discovery lost ground at the start, but afterwards trotted solidly. Crowd Expresses Disapproval

Cruiser, making his second appearance, won the Kerrytown Handicap in the best finish of the day. He began smartly, was well placed in the early stages, later lost ground, but -came with a great run over the last quarter mile. It was an excellent effort by a horse not usually regarded as genuine.

Devotion was the quickest to begin and in the early stages was followed by Frisco Silk, Tinker, Cruiser, ana Aqua Bond. Aqua Bond took over the running before the last round was commenced to lead Oversight. Devotion, Tinker, and Our Fay. Aqua Bond was still the pace-maker three furlongs from home, and even halfway down the straight she still lookea a comfortable winner. Cruiser, however, finished with a great burst of speed and got up on the post to win by a neck. It was an exciting finish, but the winner was subjected to a hostile demonstration. It was a very uppopular win with a section of the crowd. Aqua Bond, at good odds, ran the best race since coming to Canterbury and her 3min 24 l-ssec represented a good performance. Ace High did not have the best of the running, and there was merit in his thira placing. Colonel Axworthy also lost ground early and did well to finish fourth. The Sprinters Another fine race was provided in the Pareora Handicap, and in a most exciting finish Fremont gained a narrow victory from Horse Power and Toorak. Fremont was the quickest to begin, but he was eased into second place behind Waitaki Power and Red Ranger. This was the order with half a mile to go, with Horse Power, Lightning Lady, and Toorak racing in close order. At the straight entrance Horse Power was on terms with Red Ranger, but at the distance Fremont issued his challenge and he was soon in the lead. Horse Power finished with, determination and Fremont had to he hard driven to stalx off the challenge. Toorak was close up third, followed by Red Ranger, Icevus, and Southern Smile. Fremont had started earlier in the day in the John Hole Memorial, but forced to make the pace he pulled himself to pieces. He finished gamely in this race, but was plainly doing his best. Horse Power put up a fine race, but Toorak was finishing better than anything else in the race. This third marked his sixteenth consecutive placed performance. Waitaki Power and Red Ranger failed to run on at the pace set by the leaders. A Promising Three-year-old Coquette was made a warm favourite for the Farewell Handicap, and she proved the good thing tile betting suggested. She won with ridiculous ease in a race that did not proviae much excitement. Crusheen and Charles Russell were responsible for practically all the running, while Coquette was never far back in the field. As the first halt mile was completed the order was Crusheen, Charles Russell, Orby ,Lad, Coquette, Black Marble, and Dancing Pirate. The last-named made up ground at the back stretch ana was handy at the straight entrance. Here Coquette drew out and was never extended to defeat easily Charles Russell and Black Marble, the next to finish being Dancing Pirate, Bedrock, and Crusheen. Following on her good form at Greymoutb, Coquette’s effort was par-

ticularly good and she gives promise of winning more races. She is only a small edition of a racehorse, but she is all quality and a good, genuine pacer. Charles Russell went a really good race and Crusheen paced well for a mile. Dancing Pirate was not well placed early but -he showed speed.

TURF GOSSIP Track Work at Riccarton ■ The welcome rain which fell in the district on Friday afternoon had a beneficial effect on the Riccarton tracks, and the inside of the trial grass which was open on Saturday morning provided excellent going, and some attractive gallops were recorded by horses booked to race, at Trentham this week. Before Breakfast

Paper Slipper and Counterblast opened proceedings by galloping six furlongs in Imin 15 3-ssec, the second three in 37 4-ssec. Counterblast had Paper Slipper in trouble in the run home, and beat him comfortably.

Trench Fight strode over seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the first three in 37 2-ssec.

Wild Talk went fast over the first part of a similar task, taking Imin 28 3-5 sec. Good Passage accompanied her over the last four in 52 3-ssec.

Improving Galloper Wardress ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec. This five-year-old mare improved with every race she had on the West Coast circuit, and is destined ior mote important successes. She will be ridden in the Apprentices’ Plate at Trentham on Thursday by R. Caddy.

Impressive Gallops Much interest was centred in a gallop between Night Dress and Defaulter. From the mile and a quarter post they covered the first three furlongs in 35 3-ssec, and the first five in Imin 2 2-ssec, six in Imin 17sec, and completed the journey in 2min 11 2-ssec, the last mile taking Imin 43 3-ssec, and last half mile in 54 l-ssec. Defaulter did his usual solid work, while the performance of Night Dress, who finished about half a length in front, was encouraging in view of his trip to Trentham, where he will be ridden by A. Stokes, who rode him to victory in the Waikouaiti Cup. Wild Chase and Dictate were associated over a mile. They covered the first half in 50 l-ssec, five furlongs in Imin 4sec, and the full journey in Imin 41 4-ssec. They finished abreast, and while Wild Chase appeared to be doing the better work at the finish. Dictate did well in the face of suffering from heel trouble contracted at Ellerslie. His prospects at Trentham will depend on whether the track has a yielding surface.

Garonne and Phalanx covered six furlongs in Imin 17sec, the second three in 39sec. The former showed a return to his good earlier form at the West Coast meetings, and should shape well at Trentham. His owner, Mr G. Hutter, of Auckland, was present to see him work. The Sandwichman was restricted to a six-furlong gallop in Imin 18 3-ssec. He will be ridden in the Wellington Cup by P. Spratt, and has to be

accorded a favourable light-weight’s chance.

Waka reeled oft half a mile in 49sec, and Gay Parade ran the same distance along the back stretch in 50 2-ssec. Over Hurdles

Dividend (R. Register) was always in front of Top Rank (A. Stove) and Courtyard (A. Leach) over six hurdles. Supreme Court (M. Reilly) followed them over the last four fences, and gave a very satisfactory display. Temporary Respite Royal Chief will be an absentee from the tracks for a few days yet. It is thought he bruised a heel on a stone when galloping on the course proper with* Wild Chase last Thursday, and he has been confined to his box since, but his trainer hopes to have him in action again this week. A Smart Sprint

One of the fastest half-mile sprints at Riccarton on Saturday was credited to the Chokebore two-year-old fillies, Rebel Lass and Scold. The former is a sister to Rebel Song, who, but for unsoundness, would have been one of New Zealand’s best handicap horses. The filly will make her first public appearance at Riccarton next month. A patient policy has been adopted with Scold since sEe was purchased by Mr G. R. Macdonald, and she gives indications of developing into a good class galloper. Transferred

A former Rand wick apprentice. W. Cox, has joined up with F. D. Jones. Apprenticed to D. Lewis, he had a good deal of riding experience in Sydney, and should do well later in his new home. From the North

F. D. Jones has recently received a two-year-old filly by Myosotis from Karioi, by Thespian from Ayah (dam of Inferno), by All Red from Hermosa bv St. Leger. She is owned by her breeders, Messrs Kennedy Bros., of the King Country, and shapes very well in the easy tasks being allotted her. Doing Well Rebellion, who has furnished a good deal since he last appeared in public, gave a smart half-mile sprint on Saturday. He is to have his next racing at Riccarton next month. His stablemate. Sovereign Lady, was also seen to advantage in a strong working gallop over seven furlongs, and should be in good orSei* for her proposed engagement in the Midsummer Handicap. Southland Notes Trebleack has been taken up again at Invercargill by R. E. McLellan. He had to be put aside some weeks ago because of unsoundness and has put on a good deal of condition. Stone Frigate has been recommissioned by T. E. Pankhurst. The Nightmarch mare has furnished since last raced, and is in excellent order to begin a preparation.
