CURRENT NOTES

The Hon. Mr Justice Callan and Mrs Callan (Auckland), who are visiting Dunedin and are the guests of Mr and Mrs Garth Gallaway, will leave to-day on a visit to Southland. Dr. Walton Bremner and Dr. Gladys Bremner (Oxford terrace) are visiting Mrs James Macalister, Invercargill. Mr W. M. Cole (formerly assistant district traffic manager of railways in Dunedin), accompanied by Mrs Cole, left yesterday for Wanganui, where Mr Cole will take up the position of district traffic manager. The Very Rev. Dean Cruickshank and Mrs Cruickshank and Dr. and Mrs C. E. Hercus (Dunedin) will leave Wellington to-morrow by the Port Huon for England, via Cape Horn.

Mr and Mrs H. C. Smith, of Ashgrove terrace, teit yesterday by car for Bluff, on their way to Stewart Island, where they will spend three weeks’ holiday.

Dr. L. Lempriere, who recently retired from the position of medical officer at Haileybury College, Hertfordshire, and Mrs Lempriere, after spending some time in Christchurch, have left for the West Coast glaciers.

Lady Wakehurst, wife of the Governor of New South Wales, will leave in February for a six months holiday visit to England. Mr and Mrs Justice Kennedy (“Whitelee,” Dunedin) will leave Wellington on Tuesday by the Awatea for a tour to England and abroad.

Mrs J. S. Kelly (Kilmore street) left last night for Wellington, where she will be the guest of Mrs W. Glendenning for. a few weeks. Mr and Mrs Irwin Hunter, who have been spending Christmas with Mr Hunter’s parents, Professor and Mrs T. A. Hunter, Wellington, returned to Blenheim yesterday. Miss Grace Ironside has been appointed matron of the Presbyterian Family Home in Papanui. Miss Ironside, who belongs to Christchurch, has had experience .in both Plunket and Karitane nursing.

Miss Gladys Gordon (Blenheim) has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Gordon, Smith street. Kaiapoi. Mr and Mrs S. J. Richards (Kaiapoi) are spending the holidays with Mr and Mrs A. W. I. Miller, Blenheim.

Miss Ruby Rich, chairwoman of the New South Wales section of the International Peace Campaign, passed through Auckland this week by the Aorangi en route to the United States.

Miss Ena Stockley, formerly champion lady swimmer of Australia and New Zealand, returned from Sydney by- the Aorangi this week to spend a short holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. A. H. Stockley, of Green Lane. Mr and Mrs Jim Dunlop (Christchurch) are visiting Wellington for the Row©—Roberts wedding and are staying with Mrs A. Fleming. Khandallah.

Miss Helen Benbow (London), general secretary, League of Women Helpers, Toe H, who has been in New Zealand for nine months and who is at present the guest of Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnston at Sumner, will leave on Monday for Wellington to join the Awatea for Australia, where she will spend four months before returning to England. Mrs R. S. Anderson (Dunedin) will arrive to-morrow to spend the New Year at Christchurch.

Misses Margaret and Kathleen Cramley and Miss Joan Fleming (Nelson), and Miss Shirley Williams (Christchurch) are visitors to Dunedin.

Hamilton’s oldest resident, Mrs Mary Dillon, of Hamilton East, celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday on Tuesday. Mrs Dillon still has good health, and her memory is excellent. She was born in County Mayo, IreJand, and she recalls clearly the dreadful famine experienced in Ireland when she was a girl.

The engagement is announced of Edith May (Maisie), elder daughter of Mr and Mrs R. W. Crowther (Ashburton), to Leslie Joseph, youngest son of Mr J. and the late Mrs Nock. Nelson.

PREBBLETON BAND’S

DANCE

Members of the Prebbleton Brass Band arranged a dance held in the local hall, and many guests enjoyed dancing to the music of Kinsman’s orchestra.

A novelty dance was won by Miss Thomas and MCr J. Anderson, and card room prizes by Mrs A. Tomson, Mrs W. Hands. Mr C. Hands, and Mr W. Kolkman. Mr W. Millar was the master of ceremonies.
