RADIO MURDER

“Danger on the Air” With “City Streets”

Deep mystery and two seemingly unsolvable murders, alternated with unexpected moments of riotous comedy and “wise-cracking” romance, make the Crime Club picture. “Danger On The Air,” which will begin to-day at the Plaza, with “City Streets.” This film fully justifies the claim that it is even more absorbing than “The Westland Case.” “The Black Doll.” and “The Lady in the Morgue,” previous Crime Club productions. “Danger On The Air” is built round the mysterious death of Mr Kluck (Berton Churchill), a soft-drink magnate, whose body is found in an office of a big broadcasting company. Harry Jones (Jed Prouty), head of the company, tries to make it appear that Kluck died a natural death. But Benjamin Butts (Donald Woods), a clever radio sound engineer, proves that Kluck was poisoned with cyanogen gas. Kluck has made many enemies, end there are a number of suspects. These include “Steenie” MacCorkle (Nan Grey), to whom Kluck has made advances; her brother, Alex-

ander (Frank Milan): Dave Chapman (William Lundigan), a radio announcer: Tony (Lee J. Cobb), a janitor who had discovered that Kluck had been making love to his daughter, Maria (Louise Stanley); Dr. Leonard Sylvester (Edward Van Sloan), Kluck’s physician, and Joe Carney (Joseph Downing), a racketeeer. who has been doing Kluck’s dirty work. Edith Fellows, the 13-year-old girl who played “spoiled brat” roles in “Little Miss Roughneck.” “She Married Her Boss,” “Pennies from Heaven.” and other successful Columbia productions, appears in “City Streets” in an entirely new type of characterisation. As a crippled waif of the “city streets” befriended by a warm-hearted neighbour, she appears in her first sympathetic role. Leo Carillo. one of Hollywood’s foremost character actors, appears opposite the young star. Others in the cast of the new Columbia comedy drama are Mary Gordon, Tommy Bond, and Helen Jerome Eddy. “City Streets” was directed by Albert S. Rogell, from a film play by Fred Niblo, jun., and Lou Breslow. 1. Bernstein wrote the original story.
