SLACKS
TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS Sir, —“Anti-Slack” might go a little further and suggest that the beltless, braceless variety of slacks is not exactly suitable wear for young men in business. The youth of to-day arrives at his office dressed as for the beach—sports coat, slacks, open shirt —and believe me or not, the time he spends hauling those slacks into position must seriously affect his work, to say nothing of the embarrassment caused to elderly women who are not used to seeing young men tucking in their shirts and holding on to their trouser bands while doing business. There used to be a saying, “Clothes make the man.” Well, I believe that slackness in dress makes for slackness in work, particularly when, instead of easiness, the “slack” is such that the garments have to be held in position. Employers should note. The girls’ “slacks” are not slack in that sense; they are mostly so tight as to be ridiculous, if the mere wearing of such garments by women, young or middle-aged, were not ridiculous enough. But “Anti-Slack” need not worry; it is just a phase.—Yours, etc., PASSING SHOW. December 29, 1938.
TO THE IDITOB OT TH» PBISS Sir, —If women desire to wear pants, or slacks, well let them. After all it is only a habit borrowed from the past. There is nothing modern about the craze. And if some legs are not shapely, is it not a good thing to be able to hide them with trousers. —Yours, etc.. PENSO. December 29, 1938.
