BRABIN SHIELD TEAM
MATCH AGAINST NORTH CANTERBURY
I. BAXTER SCORES CENTURY
A one-day game played at Hagley Park yesterday between the Canterbury Brabin Shield team and a North Canterbury representative side resulted in a draw. The wicket was easy and gave the bowlers little assistance, but the high wind proved troublesome at times.
Two members of the Canterbury team, J. S. Rumbold and R. W. Morley, were not available, and they, were replaced by F. Way and G. Dougall. After a quiet beginning, the opening batsmen scored runs very rapidly. I. A. Baxter and J. H. Reeves, the first men in, made 100 between them in 80 minutes —the second 50 in only 20 minutes. Quick bowling changes were resorted to in an endeavour to break the partnership, but it was not until the score was 136 that Reeves skied one and was well caught for a good 55. Baxter continued to drive and hook powerfully, but wickets fell quickly, and at lunch the total was 154 with four batsmen out.
Soon after play had recommenced Baxter completed a century, characterised chiefly by good driving and placements on the leg side. He was bowled with his score at 106. R. Cassidy struck form and took some good wickets cheaply, and of the remaining batsmen only G. Dougall, with 35. really got Into his stride. Cassidy, a medium-paced bowler came out with the fine figures of five wickets for 43 runs. He took all but one of the wickets that fell after lunch, the exception being tht of A. Callaway, the Canterbury captain, who was run out. Cassidy’s success was a result of keeping the ball well up to the batsmen, a quality not always apparent in his team-mates. Oram was the outstanding North Canterbury fieldsman. The performance of the team was patchy. Left with little more than two hours and a half to score the runs for a win, North Canterbury opened with F. Capstick and F. Devlin. Runs came slowly from accurate bowling, and at tea the total was 27 without loss of a wicket. After tea play brightened slightly. Devlin opening out. At this stage the fielding of Reeves was brilliant. There appeared to be little chance of a win being obtained, but Cassidy caused some excitement by opening his shoulders and scoring 12 boundaries in his first 60 runs. He was brilliantly caught when he had added three to this score. Masefield also caused a sensation by taking three wickets in two overs.'but stumps were drawn almost immediately, the total then being 54 short of Canterbury’s score, with only three wickets in hand. ■ Details:— BRABIN SHIELD TEAM I.
